As we approached Exit 18, I got butterflies in my stomach and my pulse began to race. Poughkeepsie was only about 20 minutes from the NY Thruway and I envisioned seeing my friends and reuniting with them, even if it was for only a few minutes. Mom and I got gas, paid tolls, and I started calling: Tom, Peter, Amber, and Colleen, until Mom began to message them. It turned out that ...

... me over to the station, but it was quite dark!). The opposite side of the river was lined with multi-coloured trees - you can't beat Irvington / New York / any place when the leaves are changing colour and dancing in the breeze.

Then the train arrived. It was a very pleasant journey - all four minutes of it! The metro-north line runs parallel with the Hudson, very close to the waters edge. As long as we don't have prolonged rain of any sort (or snow for that matter), then ...

      The 37 Hour First Day

... I have a lovely view of the of the New York State Thruway from the 4th floor.

After spending a few hours recovering, I ventured outside and went up the road to Demeter's Tavern and Sports Bar. Four pints of Samual Adams Winter Lager while watching 16 (count them) TV screems showing baskbetball and gridiron is a very fine way to keep jet lag at bay.

Lessons learnt from my first day? You must look left when crossing the road.
