Luxury in Riga

So, after spending our first couple of days in Latvia on the coast in Jurmala, we were ready to head to the capital Riga, where we meeting my parents & treating ourselves to some luxury by staying in a hotel for a few days - and it couldn't come soon enough after our last campsite! Although Jurmala did have a gorgeous beach, with really clear blue sea (no jellyfish this time!), the campsite, Nemo, definately needed updating! For one in such a great location, the shower & wash faciliti...

The Sights of Dublin!

... to coastal suburbs. Public Transportation is pretty good in the city, but a Dublin car hire is your ticket to enjoying the incredible sea coast. The best places to visit in Dublin include the famous Dublin Castle, the Custom House, and the National Museum of Ireland. Come to these places and enjoy the rich history of this city and country. Dublin is a historically wealthy place and it is obviously apparent in the ...

When in Riga...

... town and it was really nice to see
something different to Riga. It had a few castle ruins and this little
park with walking sticks. There wasn't too much there but was nice for
a day. In the evening we met up with Linda, another girl from our tour
and she is also doing the same trans-siberian tour as me. We hung out
and again went out for a few drinks but didn't get home too late and
then i set out for Tartu the next day.

Stuck in Riga

... sight to see. Unfortunately I left my camera in the room as I just planned to get food and go back. But the streets are busy with people at night and I wanted to soak up the atmosphere. I got back a couple hours later. It wasn't even 7pm yet! So I uploaded more photos for you all to enjoy. You can go back through my previous entries to see them. Yesterday sucked. I set my alarm for 5am and got up, got dressed, and headed for the airport. It was only when I was ...

Viljandi to Riga

... then he "protected" me coming down. I dread what my knees will be like tomorrow! After the church - would you believe it, yet another St John's Church - I guesss that is all those Teutonic Knights - we went to find something for lunch. No English menus, but we found a cafeteria, which meant we could point to things. David had a sort of meatball, some cold chips (like French Fries - meant to be hot) & he agreed to an unknown vegetable thing that turned out to be choko, with ...

The History and Horrors of Jewish Riga

... below emulating the heartbeat of all the people, Jewish or not, who were held and killed in this camp. There were also giant statues showing the different ways this camp was used. The worst of these being a woman trying to hold onto her children. In this camp there was a children's barracks. When the distraught parent's saw men in white coats they thought that it meant their children were being taken care of. In fact, what was happening was that these ...

The bright side of Latvia

At first I thought I wouldn't make it but fortunately I managed to get to Riga on Saturday, after traveling for about ten hours (walking to Helsinki's harbour, ship to Tallinn, a long walk to the bus station and finally the bus to Rîga). As soon as I managed to phone Rita, my host, she went by car to pick me up at the station and was really helpful all during my stay in her house. At some points it was like visiting my grandfather, she ...

Riga - A beautiful winter break in Latvia

... strangely named House of Blackheads. This distinctive red brick building dated back to the 14th century where it was the home of unmarried merchants. According to local legend, the men wore black caps as they indulged in mad banquets and drinking sessions. Today though, the House of Blackheads is a museum and tourist information centre. "See that spire over there?" I said to Jodie, pointing to our left. "It's the Church of St Peter and according to this guide book, there's ...
