birds, turtles, sand and water...

Getting to Koycegiz was a bit of a logistical nightmare, (I think from Selcuk - it was three buses!!) but I got there in the end. I stayed in a guesthouse that was recommended to me from the guys I stayed with in Selcuk and it paled in comparision - but possibly because I was only one of two people staying there. The owner was a slightly strange man and he had an 'assistant' who can only be ...

Layed Back

Another beautiful day. Sunny 78 degrees on the island of Rhodes. We travel to Lindos half way down the island. To see the Acropolis were Paul spoke to the Greeks. A long climb to the top with a view to forever. Just outstanding. Back to the boat early to catch some sun by the pool.

I am going to upload a couple of pics from yesterday on Myconos to give you an idea of the beauty here.

Davo and Janet

Day trip to Rodos

... But they were our first ruins, so we enjoyed them anyway. The best part about the area was that we were all the way on top of the island, and could see for miles down the coast in either direction.
We zig-zagged our way down the hill and back into town, rewarded ourselves with a glass of wine at a local cafe. We were excited to try our first greek restaurant, and even ...

Just beautiful

What a difference a day makes. This place is absolutely beautiful. There are still lots of walls and castles that have been here for thousands of years, but it is nice and clean and friendly. We walked into the walled city and saw heaps more shops with locally made things and also lots of touristy rubbish, but no-one was hassling us to buy and we could just wander around looking and not fighting people off ...

A nice little break on a long journey.

... a magnificent bronze statue of Helios, a Greek God. It was one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world. The statue only stood for 56 years before an earthquake destroyed it in 226BC.

The medieval town of Rhodes has now been declared a world heritage site. And no wonder with its winding old lanes, ancient defensive walls and its beautiful clear sky and water. We couldn't have afforded a night here but we sure are glad we got to spend a day in this touristy little town.
<br ...

Ruined by Tourism

... present things to make the "standard tourist's" life easier. Menus are filled with the staple "tourist" foods (pizza, pasta, hamburgers and English Breakfasts), usually with bad pictures. All the bars gain a feel that could be lifted from a bad parody of Las Vegas, whilst drink prices drop to a level that ensures the drunken patrons destroy anything that would have added to the ambience of the town. Touts start to line every corner to hawk an ...

Farewell to friends

... was fantastic to see so many people there to wave us off and wish us 'bon voyage'. In turn we wish them all safe journeys and fair winds. Bridget writes..... Some people said that living in Yacht Marina was a bit like Coronation Street in that everybody knew your business but I can assure you that is not true........... On the Saturday before my birthday we had planned to go out for a quiet meal with some friends but unfortunately they were both ...

Colossal Rhodes...get it?

Next we were onto Rhodes, one of the most historically significant Greek Isles. We saw the medieval old town, the Acropolis (yes, Rhodes has one too), and the site where the Colossus of Rhodes presumably stood in ancient times. We also got in a little beach time and visited a neat pottery factory.
Goodbye Europe

... siege, the Turks won it under Suleman the Magnificent. This was the state of affairs until Turkey's disastrous backing of the wrong horse in the First World War, when the Italians, with the help of the Greeks, won it back. Then Italy went bad on them when fascism became popular and it wasn't until the end of the Second World War when British soldiers marched in, giving it back to Greece.

I asked the woman at the entrance to a watchtower where I could find the museum.
