... met Bernie Betschel (another cousin - brother to Lydia) and went on to his place in Schoerningen. What a wonderful and warm welcome I received. Nothing was too much trouble for this lovely family. Bernie and Katerina provided a mouth-watering meal with all the trimmings and in the afternoon their daughter Marlene, son-in-law Tobias and grandson Arvid also came for coffee and kuchen! Lots of talking, laughing, looking at ...

Lots of rain was predicted (and fell) this morning, and I needed to let my knee rest from the hike, so I slept late.
Did not feel like going to nearby caves either...

Walked around Quedlinburg some more, discovered that a flea market was on (I had wondered what all the campers and caravans were doing on that field the day before).

Bought some nice vintage stuff at that flea market.
      Cute liquor glasses ...

It started to rain, so I sat in a cafe for an hour or so reading and having big beer. Very pleasant and leisurely day, waiting for a dry day to do another forest / mountain hike. ...

... 1000 years before another woman became that powerful in Germany (Angela Merkel).

The city wanted to destroy all the historical half-timbered houses and replace them with modern apartment buildings. Huge protests prevented this. Now, it is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, has 1300 historical half-timbered houses, 80% of which in good renovated state. They even have a 'club' that ...

Arrived in Quedlinburg in the early evening. The city center is a maze of one-way streets combined with construction works blocking off routes I needed, but the apartment owner had already offered to come find me if I could not find the apartment.

Afterwards it turned out I was basically just one block away from the apartment when I phoned him, but when he picked ...
