Today was mostly spent travelling the long distance from Kyoto to the remote island of yakushima. We took a bullet train to Osaka then changed train to one bound for Kagoshima. From there we somehow made it onto a bus to the port. We boarded a jetfoil at 16:00 and had a pleasant 2 hour journey across with lovely sea views. The tour of today is of a nearby town, Chiran. Chiran is a small town in the middle of the Satsuma in Kagoshima Prefecture. Within the town there is a preserved Samsurai district with houses and gardens that date back about 250 years. Chiran's isolated location at the southern end of Kyushu has allowed the district to keep much of its historical character intact.

... and the apparent difference in cultures. As I look around the room I see other couples starring out the window, lost in their own thoughts, if any. There doesn’t seem to be much conversation between many of the couples and they have sad looks on their faces. But not the large Mexican family that just arrived for breakfast at full voice—at least they seem to be in good spirits.
