Algeciras, Andalusia, Spain and Canary Islands quatrequart... still wanted to experience it for ourselves. While riding the rails today we realized what a strange coincidence it is that we had just spent 5 months in the Spanish and Portuguese new world former colonies and now we've returned to the mother land. Spain and Portugal are significantly more developed and organized than South America. No doubt the silver of Potosi and Sugar Cane of Brazil benefitted the colonists much more than the colonized.
Gibraltar, Gibraltar sylviaenjeroen... I worked out from the electronic board in the station that it was the 13:20 train to Seville. So we sat back as everyone else piled onto the train. When it came to 13:30 and the train had still not left, Megan went and checked the board, and came back with the news that it had been delayed 15 minutes. People were still squeezing on to the train, with only standing space left. Finally at 13:47 I went back to check the board, and to my horror noticed that the train ...
Algeciras, Spain bigbennWe took the early bus to Tarifa so we could catch a ferry to Morocco. Tarifa was a little surf town on the Southern most point of Spain. Its funny how surfers are so similar no matter what country of language they speak. It was real laid back. We got in kind of late. None of us realized how long it would take to get there. The Spanish move at a different pace then we are used to in the US. We finally bought a ticket to go over to Morocco at 330pm. We tried to eat and buy some stuff ...
Tanger, Morocco danorr... his sleeping bag. I feel like I´m in some kind of bizarre Northern European comedy even though it shouldn´t be that funny. Not getting ANY sleep tonight I don´t think. Now Cam´s balls are about 20cms from the resting position of my feet, he is sprawled underneath my seat. The rickety train continues its slow journey as I realise that it is this kind of situation that has made my trip so memorable, alongside the moments of beauty, diversity, and excitement.
Tangier, Morocco tcorrea... large blils from the ATM I handed the driver 100DH which is about $10. I expected change but he motioned that he didn't have any. I just said keep it tihknin that since the meter said 5.64 that was half of the money I gave him when in actuality it was only 5% of what I gave him. This guy got a huge tip and I learned a valuable lesson. What I like about Morocco and any country that is this cheap is that you can screw up and get ripped off but it really is never for that much ...
Tangier, Morocco jtafuro... it would take for me to get to GIbralter since I don't need to be in Tangier tll later tonight anyway. I decided to stuff my daypack into my big pack so I'm not looking like an overloaded schmuch with "sucker" written on his forehead. I am only going to do it for the ferry crossing and the port in Tangier so I can walk with confidence to eliminate some of the hassles. My next entry should be coming from Africa.
Algeciras, Spain jtafuroMy first footsteps into Africa yielded many taxi touts vying for my business. In the end, I just walked to the coach depot and bought a ticket to Fes that left in a couple of hours. On the ferry from Algeciras, I met five other travellers and we decided, after comparing itineraries, to travel together. The coach on the way to Fes started out ...
