Our flight gets in at 10;25P and we catch a taxi to the Marin Dream Hotel (which I got from Expedia) which is a nice enough place. We plan to spend the day in Knossos and at the Museum and that's what we do all day. I loved Knossos, even though the gift shop only has 3 small cycladic sculptures (we buy them all) and we have to go across the road from the entrance to find 3-4 gift shops that have reproductions of the Snake Goddess (it's a great sculpture) and I also find a nice pair of the fre...

... and we talked about architecture, the cruise, our lives and everything in between. Our destination was the Palace of Knossos, about 90 minutes away, and the route took us along a coastal road with spectacular views to the turquoise sea. We had one hour once we got to the site due to an early 3 pm closing. It is off season, after all.

1. The Palace of Knossos is worth a visit, and in my case it was a second visit. I found ...

We found a decent looking place to stay in (Kastro Hotel) on hostelbookers.com and opted to wander around there to see if we could get it a bit cheaper than on the net. Unfortunately, the map on the net wasn't correct and we ended up doing bog laps around Heraklion for AGES in the rain with our backpacks looking for the damn place. Every time we asked someone where it was they pointed us in another direction. I mean, if you don't know ...
... local sausages from Rethmyio rounded out our meal. After some false starts looking for the bus station, we had a hot slow bus trip out to Knossos, the vast Minoan palace excavated and somewhat Disnified by Arthur Evans in the 1900s. That palace dates from 1700-1400 BC and is a large structure of 1300 rooms. The palace is known for its frescoes, labyrinthian ways, Minoan columns, and frescoes. It also contains the earliest ...
Heraklion, Crete, Greece nsadventures... Greek story tellers - the Minoans were highly organized and technologically advanced some 4000 years ago, and well before the Greeks. The palace grounds were bought from the Turks in 1900, by a British archaeologist, Harold Evans, and he spent the next 35 years investigating and restoring (controversially) the ruins. Well done Evans and another yah boo sucks to Lord Elgin.

To get there it is located in between Star Beach Resort and The Lychnostatis Museum on the road from Hersonissos to Malia. Bus stop No.24.
We had a delay. Got up around 3:45 am and left Rose Cottage at 4 O'Clock for the airport. It was already starting to get lioght as we cruised by sleeping English villages. By the time we arrived at the airport it was fully light. Stood in a lond que(sp?) for check-in where we were told that our plane was delayed adnd that would we would hear further news at 10 am! Heraklion, Crete, Greece belphoebe... spirit… sau asa am simtit eu, in cele 14 zile cat am fost in Grecia.
In Romania biserica ortodoxa e mai putin bogata in imobile, dar sper mai profunda in spirit. Desi face progrese.
... but he seemed to understand me. He made a gesture like a key turning, which I interpreted to mean closed, like everything else on Sundays. See, I learned my lesson on that point. We have a lunch scheduled for tomorrow, but we're on our own again for Sunday dinner, so I went into a grocery store and bought nuts, dried fruit, and orange juice. Now I'm ready. Long after I was in bed for the night, some of the students went out prowling Heraklion for night ...
Heraklion, Greece tiara316... for that night so that we could at least have a locked door between us and the criminals in case anything happened. Anyhow, we finally arrived at the port in Heraklion at 6:00am and were quite tired, and ended up spending 2 hours wandering around trying to find our hostel (it's called Hotel Rea, and it was mentioned in Lonely Planet, but don't worry Sarah, we didn't take the roof terrace!!!), but once we got there they let us in almost right away, and the ...
