Mariam Hotel Madaba

After leaving Petra we stopped at a couple of places on the way to Madaba. The first place we stopped was Kerak Crusader Castle. This was on top of a high mountain so it was easy to defend. Parts of the castle were still quite in tack - while other parts were a falling apart. It had a great view of the landscape around that area. Mostly barren with a few crops growing around the place. Today was another interesting day of travel. I began the morning wandering around some more areas of Damascus. The regular bus to Amman that I wanted to catch was packed and it was going to be another 5 hours until the next one. I decided to go for a "service taxi" instead. I was directed to the area for these taxis and found a huge facility with rows and rows of cars. Some that looked like yellow New York cabs and others were just regular sedans. After reading and hearing about the mosaics in Madaba I thought that i had better go and check them out. And I was glad I did - although not for the mosaics - which took all of five minutes to see and were mildly interesting - but for the taxi ride from the King Hussein Bridge to Madaba via Mt Nebo. It was a mildly hazy day but the view was still spectacular - you could see all the way down to the Dead Sea and the land surrounding it. Apparently on a clear day you can even see Jerusalem.
