Back on the train for a 2:45 hour trip to Salzburg..approx 290 kms south/ west of Vienna..thank heavens for the heated compartments again as the temp dropped to minus seven! ... we were at Charnel house, which has existed since the 12th century.
It is crammed with 1200 skulls about half of which are elaborately painted and marked with the family name and the date of death. The last skull to be placed here was in 1995 on special request. Our campsite was a short walk from the bus stop which took us in to the centre of town. There was a light misty rain which made everything rather grey, but we set off on our walking tour anyways. We started off in a square with a statue of Mozart. A short walk away was a much larger square with a huge fountain that was being power-washed.
