... poor quality and winding. However it traversed some amazing scenery which we had a little more time to enjoy. We had been riding a lot of the day with Nuna, a guy from Lisbon in Portugal who was one of the ‘Triple Crown’ riders - the group of nine who were doing all the Haute Route events in succession. He hadn’t had a true rest day in three weeks! He was strong and helped us on the flats and cheered us up on the climbs. How could we complain when we ...

Back into the present tense to give a sense how it rolled out…….

I get into a rhythm. Concentrate on keeping it steady at about 230 - 240 watts. I have a power meter on my bike and know that my anaerobic threshold when I start producing too much lactic acid is about 260 watts. I’m hoping that I can sustain ...

Boldly going forward we set off east towards Ponferrada, then onto Astorga, Leon and finally Burgos. The road between Ponferrada and Astorga was part of the Camino de Santiago route again, albeit in the opposite direction, and involved traversing some pretty gnarly backroads by European standards. This was a road that Peter hated but for me was pure heaven - a good demonstration of the difference between riding an adventure bike or a ...
