Surf and rocks for a change

We arrived to the sound of the fog horn blasting through the gloom. Having set up we explored along the coast from the campsite. Even with very poor visibility, about twenty yards, it was clear that this part of the coast was something special. Although there was no mention of it in guide books it is a landscape of eroded limestone pavements, stacks, caves and archways towering a 100 feet above the ...

Fatima - Shrine of Our Lady

Fatima<br>On the 13th of each month from May to October 1917, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three shepherd children - Lúcia dos Santos (age 10) and her cousins Jacinta (age 7) and Francisco Marto (age 9) - in the fields outside the village of Aljustrel near Fatima. The children later said that her coming had been preceded by an "angel of peace ...

Fatima - a holy place

Fatima - where the lady of Fatima appeared to 3 children! It was an amazing place because of the story happened in early 20th century. It sounds so real.. so I did some research on it after I returned to the US. <br><br>So it was back in 1917 - May 13. The first apparition. That year every 13th the lady appeared to the three children. In October 13, 70K people appeared in front of the Olive Tree and ...

Obidos - saw just the wall

In the morning we went to Obidos, an old castle/city. There was a medieval festival the day before (just ended the day before or we would have seen people dressed in Medieval clothings!). Because of the end of the festival, we couldn't really go anywhere. So we ended up just climbing up a wall, took ...

Day(s) at the Beach

The next day we picked up our rental car and headed for the coast. We stopped off at the Casa de Ribeira winery for our best visit to a winery yet &#8211; a terrific friendly host, a 400+ year old building, a great selection of local snacks for lunch &#8211; delivered by the mother of our host and of course great wine. It wasn't so much of a wine tasting as it was "Let&#8217;s open several bottles and drink what until you are finished."<br><br>And though we could have continued sitting and ...

There was a lively square just on the doorstep of the hotel lined with resturants having sitting tables on the square itself.<br><br>We searched for an Indian restaurant as directed by the hotel receptionist but found none. Therefore, we retired to our room &amp; had some lovely bhel with sandwiches.

FAREWELL LISBON - HELLO NAZARE

... fraction of what Lisbon has to offer.  Donºt ask us to remember the countless historical dates, Kings, Queens, Navigators, castles, monestaries, convents, museums, statues, and/or monuments - but the jist of it is that the Portuguese were adventurous seafarers. Nice thing about Lisbon, most people speak English, you can drink the local water, wine is cheap, food is good (however only spice they know is salt), very clean (streets washed every 2nd ...

Praia e Campo - Beach and countryside

Sexto día Quinta 12 After a pretty standard continental breakfast, we walk again on the beach. The breakers are furious, and there are colossal lifesavers on tall poles all along the beach. Each one has a telephone number, so one presumes that if you are drowning you should call that number and ask for a giant to get it down and throw it out to you. We then take ...
