Like the India border, we had to wake up the Nepalese immigration dudes. Unlike India though, they were all smiles and very friendly... especially seeing we were Kiwi’s. We were in Nepal, where the great Sir Ed had conquered and then given so much back. Booked into a hotel and woke early to jump onto another ancient bus for an 8 hour bus ride. It was a nice drive though up into the mountains so the time passed relatively quick. Other than the toilet stop (something India should incorpor...

Kathmandu, Nepal gaiamuni... built sometime in the 60's. There are about 8 different lines to go through and no one knows who should go to what line or even what they should be doing in at every station. Its like the British came over in 1963 built them an airport and showed them how do run everything, then said "here you go, take it from here" The only thing they do efficiently is take your $40 entry fee. Next you need to go through the swine flu ...

Kathmandu, Nepal marymc21... when i get the morning off and just go to the orphanage in the afternoon.
I'm finding very small things give me a lift i.e I had a new light bulb in my room which is brighter so now I can read. They have also fixed the one above the outside basin which means I don't have to wash and do my teeth in the dark before bed. Anything that just makes things a little more comfortable is such a blessing. I was also praying another volunteer would arrive and yesterday my prayers were ...
Kathmandu, Nepal lizcap... this is because I checked out what was available in the bakery first!

As I did not sleep well last night (heavy rain and barking dogs are not conducive to sound sleep even with ear plugs!) I was up early trying to practice what I learnt yesterday. I can remember some vocabulary but putting it into a sentence is still mostly beyond me apart from asking "what is your name?" and answering "my name is Susan". Hey it is a start, I didn't expect it to be easy!

We also ...
Kathmandu, Nepal slw321... three, today.
the following day we woke up to an overcast sky and a cold shower. although the temperature here stays modestly in the late teens to early twenties, the humidity is about 50%, which didnt go down well with briggsy's hungover stomach. one breath of kathmandu air out on the communal balcony, and i heard an uneasy voice over my shoulder. kathmandu, Nepal ex-cessionIt's already hot and it's still early. I hope it won't be a scorcher but it just might be. I think we go to the lake on top of the mountain today. Hah, maybe it's just like Lake on the Mountain in Picton??? Then off to another village. I think there's yet another festival tonight too.

As I write there are two kids peaking through my half open door and giggling whenever I look out at them. The small boy runs away then reappears. Cute.<br ...
Charikot, Nepal joannabee... and words in their books and answered the questions I asked but mostly it was pandemonium. I asked another teacher if this was normal. She said, yes, quite normal. Ok then! but I do think they are a wee bit crazier with me...

The other teachers are really nice as well. As the kids played outside on their break, we sat in the yard and talked. They wanted to know all about me too. I'll be coming back to teach here in a couple of days.
Kathmandu, Nepal joannabee... that we had to hire a taxi and put bags onto it's roof.

Nadia splashed outt on a new backpack and i scored a new daypack, our third one of the trip each. I now have a pair of those ridiculous fake Teva sandals and they look absolutely absurd on me. A street shoe repairer fixed my Keens hiking shoe and we stocked up on more Ayurvedic recipe products, tampons and hard to find in India goods than you can poke a stick at.

Three months has flown by in Nepal.
