Signing Up

As with all good stories, this one begins with my boss calling me at about 11am on a Monday morning in March with the classic opening line,

"How would you like to do something for charity?"

To which I obviously replied “Of course John. What have you signed me up for now?”

Over the course of the next five minutes, he tells me that he was approached at a conference where we were exhibiting by a young lady, Alexi, wondering if he would be int...

Rooftop of Africa

Wow - where to begin with my first real trip blog entry? I wasn't sure what to expect with my initial visit to Africa so it was with a bit of trepidation that I began my journey here. However most of my worries have been unfounded and I've found Tanzania to be quite welcoming, although a bit pricier than I anticipated. I was drawn to Tanzania for one very big reason - Mount Kilimanjaro, all 19, 340 ft / 5,895 m of it. Kili is the highest mountain in Africa, and it is also the only one of the ...

TIP: The local food ofthis area is delicious, don't forget to try it.

TIP: Stop in at the Village Education Project Shop. All proceeds go to the programme which teaches people how to use computers and gives them access to the internet in order to keep in contact with international visitors as well as giving them a qualification for finding work. There is also a Trade School for those who are not able to get into high school so they can become carpenters, etc.

Kilimanjaro...soo you think you can handle it?

Hello Everyone,

I haven't written in my travel blog in a while as I have been hiking Kilimanjaro and as you will see didn't have access to any Internet for a while.

So last I wrote I was in Kigali and booked a flight to Tanzanian airport. The flight was pretty good and was actually surprised by the service which was a lot better than Air Canada with a lunch and any beverage I wanted including alcohol.

When I got to the airport though I was in for a ...

Destination 370

km184'470

From the lovely palm fringed coast back to the hot interior of the country. A interesting gravelroad brought me back to the main road, where a changing country side was offering fine views while approaching the Mount Kilimanjaro. On my way to Moshi

... asphalt give us a short break to breathe and relax, and then we are on again in the dusty roads. First "pit-stop" is in the bush - I run out quickly on the side of the road, making sure the bus doesn't leave without me. Finally, we reach Arusha. From here the road is better and it's another hour to Moshi, where the representative of Kessi Brothers, the company with which I will be climbing, is meeting me at the bus station ...

Integrating into the Kenyan lifestyle
Ok so where to start there are so many things to say about the town of Oloitokitok. Since this is my first real experience in Kenya and I lived there for two months. After arriving on our long journey from Nairobi we finally arrived in Oloitokitok. My first impressions were “wow this place is horrible, there are so many pieces of trash everywhere and goats and chickens running around.” Obviously my opinion has changed over my experience there. Each of us were assigned a ...

Somewhere over the rainbow....

... For those of you who, after reading are inspired to try your own hand at international volunteerism, please feel free to contact me - I'd love to share more with you. I wrote a newspaper article detailing my work with TAFCOM. It is set to run on May 23rd in the Burlington Spectator (I don't know the URL but I am sure you'll find it if you google it.). I will post the link to the article on this blog when I can. I don't ...

TAFCOM's Fundraiser and Surgery for Amose

May 12, 2009 I appologize for the temporary hiatus in my posting! Things have been busy this past week and I have had a hard time finding reliable internet time (the rains in this country make everything next to impossible). Since I last posted much has progressed on the TAFCOM front. As many of you are aware, I was originally scheduled to volunteer with CCS for 4 weeks. I left myself an extra 2 weeks in Africa to enjoy myself after my volunteer ...

... amounts of noise! We were woken at 11pm with our porters bringing us cups of tea and biscuits, and then we dressed. I wore 2 thermal tops, 2 fleeces, raincoat, hat, neckwarmer, 2 thermal bottoms, walking trousers, 3 pairs of socks and gloves! Kabila and I set off around 12 with headtorches on as it was pitch black outside. This was good as I couldn't see the mountain and how far I had left to walk! The walk up was difficult as it was up a scree slope, so you slid and slipped ...
