My first official work vacation

I decided to take advantage of my paid vacation and spend two weeks in Trinidad and Tobago. My good friend Kevin Fortune, who I met in college, is from Trinidad and was a phenomenal tour guide. I stayed away from computers, cell phones and any reading materials related to the economy and/or the environment.

Here's Where the Story Ends

... did have a few to document on our last night, including a batch of hatchlings that burst through their sandy chamber on the beach in front of us. We watched them scrambling on top of each other, bubbling out into the humid night air, and we lit them up with dim red lights to be sure that no one accidentally trampled them. Nature Seeker Don (who incidentally has a pet squirrel that he keeps in his left pants pocket--and yes, I actually mean a squirrel) came over to me with two of ...

The Day Everyone and their Dog Fell into the Ocean

... incident. Good God, what were they doing? Peter, in front, was holding his paddle as though he was mowing the lawn, the blades barely grazing the water. And Lee, what in the world was she doing? She had her paddle pushed out in front of her as though she was walking the tight rope. Ronald, Richard, and I all shouted out tips and encouragement, but it was no use. And the look on Peter's face...what was that look? At that moment, Peter and Lee appeared to be the ...

Sweet and Tender Houligans

... near the Rustic Shack, he came directly to me. I don't know why. In almost a whisper, followed by a scent of liquor, he said, "I'm interested in viewing the turtles." I wondered, is this what a poacher looks like? We were supposed to have left an hour ago; did he think no one would be here? I pointed him toward two staff members standing nearby, they had a brief conversation, and then the man departed. I went to Francis, Suzan's brother who has been a Nature Seeker patroller ...

Foolish Fools

During the daytime hours, we have the option of hanging out at our accommodations at Susan's Guesthouse in Matura village, maybe toodling over to the Dis-and-Dat Shoppe to pick up a bottle of pop, roaming the village streets and fending off crazed looking island dogs that are a cross between Corgies and Beagles, or venturing out onto a planned excursion. Yesterday, the planned excursion was a kayaking adventure on the Salybia River. Now, I was a little leery ...

the adventures of tin tin the drug runner

... with only the engine barely touching the sea? that was us. he wasn't trying to kill us, nor give us a thrill(ok, maybe just a little) but he was trying to get us out of the waves that kicked up and were making life very difficult. even his assistant, duck, was having a rough go of it. afterwards he said that he hadn't seen the sea like that in a while. but we got in safe, i survived and was starving because of it. leslie ...

Class and Mabel-Impressions From a Post-Tourist

... and shake its very core. I mean, that's good. Right? I didn't mean for that to get all deep, but I guess that part of my brain just needed to be explored. Anyway, Mom don't freak out, but we took a private car up to The Mount and a private car back down. That's the equivalent of walking down Madison Avenue downtown, hearing a honk from a car of someone driving in their fancy sudan, and hoping in for a $3TT to $6TT drive to your intended ...

Carnival time in Tobago

... with coolers holding all kinds of beautiful rum drinks and water for the revellers. On Monday and Tuesday, people parade around the city in these "bands" and they drink and party all day long. The party goes from one end of the city to the other, and then goes back to the park and starts over the next day. It is said that the carnival activities rival those in Rio and top the festivals in New Oreleans. After Carnival, we flew over to Barbados to wait for the rest of the surveyors and boats to arrive.

Back in the Empire !

Jason here again The traffic from Caracas city center to the airport was unbelievable and it took 1.5hrs in a taxi compared to the usual 25 minutes. We arrived 40 minutes before the flight and were told there was not enough time for the luggage to make it through the intense security checks which are part of the Venezuelan way of life. However, there were at least 10 people sitting behind the check in desk doing nothing so I asked them if they liked doing nothing or would like to ...

HARD WORK MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND

... and on bottom. In between, I had fifty thin bars to paint, some straight, some corkscrewing. There were also a ground-level guardrail, spiky things on top, and a nightmarish caged box. In order to achieve the angles necessary to paint all corners of the gate, I would've needed to be a three-inch hurculean contortionist. The atmosphere was nice. We were in a quiet suburb of Trinidad's capital, Port of Spain. Many yards grew trees sprouting orange ...
