Taking it Easy in Beijing

... City. The second important point of interest was the Imperial Vault of Heaven (Huang Qiong Yu) or Echo Wall. It is basically a smaller version of the Hall of Prayer with a single cylindrical top. The final site we saw was the Circular Altar (Yuan Qiu), which is a three-tired marble terrace. It was less impressive than the other two buildings but we still took a number of photographs. In addition to entertaining tourists, the Temple ...

The Great Wall is pretty great

... to be challenging. The best part of the experience was to see the Great Wall extend miles and on without a sea of tourists. Other than the occasional haggling from locals..."coka,wata,beeya (coke, water beer)", we had the wall to ourselves, just the wall, two countries, and us. We were amazed at the sights every step along the way. The weather was perfect (it was really hot during the July '05 hike), the views were great, and the colors of the scenary ...

Tomorrow I'm headed to Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the Silk Market. Photos forthcoming! Love, Mauresa Update: I ended up going to Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace (instead of the Silk Market).

... monitoring, taxi cabs must use meters and can not discriminate customers. But at night when the government control lags, taxi drivers get away with 'murder' by picking up only foreigners to make more money because foreigners don't care about using meters and are willing to pay higher flat rate as long as they get the taxi. ... his ticket back accidentally, and it caused hours and hours of trouble at the train station trying to organize a replacement ticket. Today dad opened his wallet and found it. It was so surprising. But when you find something, you lose something. We took taxis to the CCTV tower to look at, and Dad had his treasured GPS on the dashboard, tracking the way. We got out of the taxis in a hurry, leaving the GPS on the dashboard, yet we ...

Arrived in Beijing

... to me more than a month ago. I booked my flight according to that email! I could have gone home earlier if they had sent me the schedule ahead of time. I'm learning how the Chinese do things as we go... The hotel we're staying is only slightly better than the one we stayed in Suzhou, but I guess I can tolerate it since it has an AC unit in the room! Getting the return flight changed will incur ...

Beijing experiences 101

... they dont like a lot of intimacy, no bicycles (bc apparently they are connected to poor people), no tanning action (farmers related), peferably no girl babies. I have learned a lot in the job, even though I dont do that much on a daily basis. But I see things, and hear things, and it is amazing how differently things are perceived by the consumer. (Plus, a coworker eats as a snack every evening a glazed frog on a stick..so..china is all around me)
