          ... hills, in Russia's part.
After 120 km, the stop was in the nowhere, beside a restaurant, they had no rooms or bed there, so my stay had to be in the tent!
While setting it up, lots of people came along, wondering where I am up to, normally taking the standard picture together.
After a rich meal in the restaurant, I had no problem to fall quickly asleep in my tent, if only the getting out of the ...

The senior officer instrusted the junior to ingore our passport and swipe our Return Home Permit like what they normally do with a regular Chinese passport. At the immigration counters, at least one of the Russian officials knew a little bit Mandarin, when we were dropping stuff off at the x-ray machine, she said yi-ge yi-ge (one by one). Everything was very slow, but smooth. We succeeded leaving Russia!

A travel blog entry by helenruththomas on Jan 05, 2011

We spent 12 hours crossing the border between Russia and China!! The timetable had us down for approx. 6 hours at each border station which we couldn't believe could possibly be true – but it was!! The trains in Russia and China run on different gauges so the bogies (wheels) are changed at the border.

Tho toilets closed an hour before we reached the border - no using toilets whilst bogies are being changed (for obvious reasons!), but ...

... in a 4 bedded compartment. The guidebooks tend not to recommend it, as there is not much privacy, but having been in both a compartment and platscartny, i would definitely travel platscartny where i could.

There is a distinct etiquette that you learn on the train (well this was our experience/observation anyway!). Number 1 - change your shoes as soon as you get on the train into train shoes, like the beautiful blue pair i bought in Moscow!, also change ...
