More monkeys than you can poke a stick at!

Yes, tourism advertisments do work. After Jane saw a publicity photo of a couple in a beautiful spa in a place called Manuel Antonio, we looked it up in the good ol Lonely Planet and saw that the area was home to a beautiful beach and a national park packed with animals. Sold!

... but it is contaminated with feces). We got to the guard house where they checked our tickets and we went into the park. We had just barely gotten into the park when I saw a snake on the trail. A few steps more and Necia would have stepped on it. I yelled at Necia to stop, but I didn’t yell snake. When she finally saw the snake she was very frightened . She told me that in the future when I see a snake she is about to step on, I should ...

Do You See What I See?

... love it. Evidently the drunkedness manifests itself when you are in the sun vs. the shade. I guess it therefore also gives them an excuse not to work. I noticed Doug and my cousin scouring the ground for the orange fruit, but it was to no avail. Just kidding, just kidding... There was also a tree on the beaches that has a poisonous sap. The sap can cause second degree burns and if it gets in your ...

LA to Costa Rica Day One

... and I love rain. I make sure that I pack an umbrella this time. Too bad I forget some waterproof boots for all the sloshing around in mud that will be on the agenda. Our first snafu upon arriving at LA International Airport is to discover that our first leg of the trip flight to Houston Texas has been delayed by several hours. As we entered the Continental Airlines terminal we were faced with a throng of travelers in lines going every which way ...

Eating snot and other fruits

... carrots appear as if they've traveled for weeks, or longer. I have, however, eaten a few fruits I hadn't yet had in life (and believe it or not, I can translate that sentence into Spanish now!) When we went on our Tapanti National Park expedition, Margoth brought a sweet granadilla for us to try. Wikipedia says, among other things: "The seeds, which are hard and black, are surrounded by a gelatinous sphere of transparent ...

Spencer, a retired school teacher and librarian from Wisconsin, and I want to get there before dawn as that's the best time to see the birds.) My "funny Spanish moment" from the weekend: I thought I was asking my homestay mother if I could take a shower before we went somewhere. In fact, I asked if *she* could shower me ...

Orosi

Hooooola Costa Rica!

... I touched down at about two p.m. in the middle of a torrential rain storm. When I say torrential, I´m not exaggerating. It´s not called rainy season for nothing. When it rains, it RAINS! I really wish I had bought those Crocs now (as hideously ugly as they are.) Anyway, the first thing that I noticed when I hit the airport was how small everyone is here. Yes, I´m among the little ...
