Keep Austin Weird

If you've ever been to Austin, you'll recognize that as a bumper-sticker slogan that is so very true. Whole Foods started here, and it is a mix of granola hippies, artists, musicians and other generally strange but cool people. Mike and I have both been to Austin before, so we mostly just bummed around. After enjoying our hotel's happy hour,I went …

Texas, Thankfully by Name Alone

... area for a drink and possibly a bite to eat. After a few stops in some cool shops along Congress we decided to embibe at Snack Bar. Snack Bar was an old 60s dinner/lounge style establishment. We ordered a round, sat on the couch and took full advantage of their free Wi-Fi. From there we hit up the food truck The Flying Carpet. They were dishing out some delicious Moroccan foods mainly wrapped up in nan bread so you could eat on the go. Since we had no ...

... was huge, row after row of good ol Texas cowboy boots as minimalist or intricately detailed as you like, & the smell of all that leather, amazing!! And of course in true hipster style there were plenty of skinny jeans & beards. We then made the short walk over the bridge into downtown Austin. Covering about six blocks was the Austin Fan Fest set up for the Formula1 fans, lots of stalls of F1 gear & promotional stands of the sponsors, ...

... with my family, we managed to get into a great debate over the Pro's and Con's of the concept of such a permanent punishment! Well, now in hindsight, I guess It's one thing to think you have opinions on it when it's not relevant to you, but I discovered its another thing to be faced with some of the public realities of it! (rather wakening)). Anyway, another empty Celebrity occasion!

Even after our first bus experience, we decided we would take the downtown bus to ...

The Day I Did Really Cool S#!%

This was by far my favorite day.

We hadn't gotten much sleep since my arrival, so sleeping in on Saturday morning felt AMAZING. It was very much needed!

Eventually we woke up and prepared ourselves for the day. Emily made us a great breakfast so we'd have lots of energy for our trip to Lake Travis. Once we were dressed and ready to go we made the drive out to the lake to go zip lining!

Let me just say, ...

    Not the same hotel!!

    from

This can't be the same hotel. I agree with the person who said the staff was unfriendly. What happened to the lady who USED to work at night?? She was lovely. The people they have now are just rude. While we like the convenient location, they might have just lost us as regular patrons.

My advice? The rooms are still wonderful, but the staff is HORRIBLE. I don't know what's going on, but until they solve their issues - find someplace else to stay.

Were we at the same hotel?

    from

Stayed here for a weekend football game. We were in the newer section and the room was ok, nothing special but it was all they had. The air conditioning vent blew on us all night and we froze after getting up 25 times and playing with the controls. Finally we just gave up. The staff was the most unfriendly I've ever encountered. Their only concern was the wedding they were preparing for. It's a great place to stay and walk to UT football games from. Other than that, we must have missed the appeal. They do try with down pillows and bedding but the view from the cheaper rooms is of a fence!

    Great hotel!! Loved it!

    from

My wife and I stayed the weekend here, just time away from the kids. We had a wonderful time. The staff was attentive, our room was luxrious and the extra charge for the romance package was worth EVERY penny!! We'll be back and soon!

Too Bad The Walls Can't Talk

    from

I checked a friend into this building four years ago, back when it was one of the only rehab facilities in Texas available for stage III alcoholics without insurance.

I had an opportunity to stay at the Mansion at Judge's Hill on business this year, but there's no way I would spend a single night at a luxury hotel that had once been the only haven for so many needy people in pain.

    It's shameful.

Stay at the Hotel San Jose or Stephen F. instead.

    Nicest Boutique Ever Been In

    from

This place is incredible. A perfect getaway from screaming kids, etc. It is a $5 cab ride to the party district of Austin, but feels a world apart. Even though this is right off a major street, you feel that once you come in the door, that you are a world apart. The rooms are all done very nicely, in tans, creams, etc. If you are in the new section of the hotel SPLURGE and get a suite. The have much larger bathrooms and makes the whole room just a little nicer. The restaurant here is VERY EXPENSIVE, (fine..I mean FINE dining) and they have no bar, but will bring you drinks out on the porch. This place is great, and for the price of the rooms it is by far the nicest boutique style hotel I have ever stayed in.

    Lovely room

    from

We wanted to come to Austin for the music scene, and wanted to stay someplace "special". This hotel is wonderful. The history, the sumptuous and luxurious surroundings. Our room was just unbelievable. Our room was in the Mansion and had a 4 poster bed, draped with gossamer fabric. I just couldn't believe that this is a hotel....it seemed more like being a guest of some very rich friends! The staff treated us like we were VIPs. We had heard that the hotel was posh without any of the attitude and that is exactly how it was! We plan to return to Austin to visit and will only stay here!!!

    Fantastic Service!

    from

My husband and I stayed here. We were suprised at the level of service. The rooms are gorgeous! If you're lucky enough to find a room available in the actual Mansion, jump on it! It will truly be worth the money! (Though the North Wing is just as beautiful.) Everything we asked for, was done promptly and courteously. It was ritzy without any of the attitude. We truly felt like "guests". Expect to see political people, it's one of their fave places to stay!

    Gorgeous luxury hotel!!!!

    from

This hotel is gorgeous! I admit that I was a little concerned when I heard some people refer to it as a bed & breakfast. It's NOT! It's a luxury, 4 star hotel. Our room was beautifully appointed and the quality of service was phenomenal. I found the staff to be very nice and accommodating. I fully recommend making reservations in their restaurant. The food is fantastic! If you stay anywhere downtown, stay here.

    Beautiful Room

    from

My husband and I spent New Year's Eve at the Mansion and had a wonderful time. We've stayed at many nice hotels in other cities, but none have been has enjoyable as the Mansion at Judges Hill.

    An excellent place to stay!

    from

This was our first stay at a bed and breakfast, and it was great! Steve (the owner) was very courteous, friendly, and helpful. There were always fresh delicious homemade cookies and pastries available. The breakfast was superb - hot, fresh, and tasty. The decor was lovely and very cozy. We both attended the University of Texas and never knew such a gem existed so close to campus! We would highly recommend the Governor's Inn, especially for people visiting the UT campus.
