On the night of 21st, we arrived in Agra. The first part where we went through was old part of Agra. I thought it was the Indian city I had expected as a tourist. To tell you the truth, I would have visited Old Delhi, if I had had time, because I thought of it as the most charactaristic Indian city. In fact, we just follow our Indian guide during our stay in India except early-morning walks around the hotels. So we had no choice to travel freely as a matter of course. That is a disadvantage o...
Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India misocutletSunday - We're up at 4:45 - train at 6:15 to Agra. The taxi takes us to New Delhi station without any lights the whole way! There is more traffic this am, and the station forecourt is a jostling mass of people. We find the train on the board and then settle down to some serious people watching for the hour before it arrives - we are too early! When it does arrive, we are in the equivalent of First Class Chair with all the other westerners. We get breakfast on board! At Agra, we make for the p...
Agra, India radcliffe-rileyHello everyone, Well we finally arrived in Agra after a long trip from Delhi. The roads weren't too bad but at times the traffic was a little thick. Our hotel is a nice oasis in the midst of a busy city but it does seem to cater mostly for foreign tourists. It actually has a massage spa downstairs which I think we will take advantage of. I have developed a twinge in my left shoulder which has given me trouble all the way from Delhi. The rest of our day has no set program but our driver has of...
Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India wbeardslHello again, we travelled from Agra to Jaipur today and stopped to look at Fatehpur Sikri (this included a ruined city, abandoned city palace and mosque). Apparently this was a city that was abandoned due to lack of water and political reason by the Mughals. It has since been preserved as a world heritage site. It is also quite interesting to note that many of the world heritage sites in India (and many of the main roads) are being restored in time for the Commonwealth Games next year (2010)....

Left at 6:30 on the bus which took about 6 - 7 hours to reach Agra. Although there is always something going on around you, the Plains are a flat and bland compared to the Mountains and foothills. Its hot and humid, and although there has not been a lot of rainfall this year, everything is green and tropical.

There seems to be a competition here to see how many people you can fit on/in a ...
Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India jold... Mahal.

Obviously we'd seen all the Taj pictures and knew what it looked like, but seeing it for the first time with our own eyes - it really took our breath away as we walked through the archway. Incredible. It is so huge. Looking at the massive monument, made from solid marble and built in the name of love, it is astonishing to think that this was created over 370 years ago. How did people do this? Completely amazing and it just captures your ...

We leave as they are closing the fort for the evening and return to the hotel. After a very delicious buffet dinner, with a lot of Indian specialty foods, we return to the room to get ready for tomorrow. We arranged with Rampal to meet us at 9 am for the 8 hour drive to the state of Rajasthan and his city of Jaipur. April 27th 13th installment
Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India juanitobosque... to be happy, and throw neon colored powder at each other. Bunty and Jamil took us out to see the celebrations. Everywhere you looked, people were bright shades of pink, blue, green and purple, covered head to toe. Even the cows and dogs got it. Everyone you met would yell," HAAAAPPY HOLI!!!", hug you and promptly smear your face with a new color of powder By the end of our hour trip around town, we were donning rainbows as well. Throughout our visit in Udaipur, we visited ...

Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India olefrog... and grope Michelle. And then, all of a sudden, we emerged from the crowd and hastened to the safety of the guesthouse. A minute later the lights came on again and all seemed surreally calm.

That day in Agra seemed like a microcosm of our experience so far in India. One minute we're having a great time and seeing beautiful things and then next we're involved in ugliness and cursing the day we ever set foot in the damned country. And so it goes on, up and down, up and down....
