... dinners have been € 55 -€ 70, with two relatively flagrant exceptions, the last of which was in Switzerland. Speaking of Switzerland, it is not advised for the frugal traveler. Our lodging has been averaging about € 85/night. It was twice that much for a standard room in Chur, CH. ... The wind howled in our faces on the way but blew us 'all the way home.' More vineyards per hectare than we've ever seen . Even per acre. The entire countryside is covered in vines. Or protected, pristine forests. Or painfully picturesque villages. Our hotel for the next three nights is about a five minute walk from the center of the old village, rich in history. We did something akin to "bar-hopping," visiting a few ...

... about cuckoo clocks and Black Forest cake. Although the working clock on the outside of the building was impressive, the workshop was a glorified cuckoo clock shop. Not my favorite excursion of the trip.

Our afternoon optional excursion to Colmar in Alsace made up for a disappointing morning. Located 40 miles south of Strasbourg on the Lauch River, the city proper has about 70,000 inhabitants. It is also the capital of the Alsatian ...
