Today we explored Deep Mani, the arid southern half of the Peloponnese's "middle finger," noted for its martial towers and fierce inhabitants. After walking around Vathia, we took advantage of unseasonably warm weather to swim, hike, and lunch on the beach at Porto Kayio. ...

Late this morning, after we had packed the car and given up hope of visiting Patrick (Paddy) Leigh Fermor's house, Mary got a call with the green light from the Benaki Museum in Athens. We walked there (half a mile along a public path) and were greeted by Elpida, supervisor of the house and Paddy's caretaker during the last 7 years of his long life. She showed us around (no photos inside) and told great strides with great affection for her old boss. ...

So it's 5am, in the Evripides Hotel, Psiri, Athens. We arrived yesterday, 34 hours after leaving Canberra. We did enjoy a lovely visit in Adeliade, seeing my brother Tony, his wife Lydia, daughter Alicia and grandson Henry. He has just moved to a new cottage in Prospect, where they are enjoying the inner city lifestyle. I also caught up with my mum in her nursing home. She is looking pretty frail, and poor love does not have many teeth left. She is also having trouble swallowing. ...

... Mani hotel, called Xemoni, just outside Oitilo: the view was amazing (the best I have seen in the area and I have been here a lot), the rooms lovely and our host gracious We were not lucky with our Monemvasia guesthouse though. While the room was fine and the location within the castle, the owners' rude behavior completely ruined it for us. ...
