Well considering we only had a few pillows between us and our eclectic assortment of bedding we slept considerably ok. We did however decide to rent a car and head over the hills to Santa Monica and find a Walmart to get some essentials . Our lovely neighbours offered to take me and the kids to the beach whilst Des and Pippa went off to buy proper bedding, chairs etc. The beach was beautiful and just how I'd imagined it ...

... in front of nearly every nook and cranny down here. Catalina Island is in the southern group.

These islands are the main/only cruising ground down at this end of the left coast. It’s nice that folks here have somewhere to go with their boats. Once we left the Pacific Northwest there hasn’t really been any place where you can go with a boat, drop the anchor and just hang out and explore. Everyone along the coast just sails out ...

So we drove as quickly and safely--while still enjoying the Pacific Coast Highway--down the coast of California as possible. It was ...

Now 8 days away from leaving for our trip! Neither of us has been abroad in at least 10 years and it's about time to get some stamps in our passports. Although I am a bit nervous about the flight(s) I just have to tell myself it's safer than a car, and know that it can't be worse than the flight I took to London when I was 13 years old and there was so much ...

    Goodbye LA! Hello Ventura! (temporarily)

After much research, we finally decided on our luggage choices for 3 months of travel. We chose oversized backpacks as our carry-ons (both maxing out at 20' height for international travel standards) and two "American" carry-ons (22" height) as our check in bags. We found the DaKine 55L InFlight backpack on-line and the Outdoor Products 41L laptop backpack at REI. We are packing enough for 2 weeks worth of clothing and surprisingly found we have ...
