The Adventures of Ubud

... for me.

We then had a look at the royal palace near the market - which wasn't all that interesting. However certainly worth a look if you are interested in Balinese architecture of visiting the market.

After this we went back to the hotel for a bit, and then walked to the monkey forest. It was absolutely beautiful, I would definitely go again - no hesitation. The forest was beautiful, huge Banyan trees and the monkeys were friends. I had two monkeys ...

Biking in Bali

... made several stops along the
way the first being to a coffee and fruit plantation where we tried a
delicacy – Coffee Poo! Ok, so not exactly the coffee is made from
beans that the Luwak (looks like a ferret) eats and then deficates.
The beans are then dried and roasted (someone has to stir the beans
continuously for an hour). Luwak coffee is very expensive so we just
bought a cup for taste. The verdict: tastes rich!!! Actually it was<br ...

Bali: Post Typhoid

Ever since Michael started taking his antibiotics to treat his typhoid, things slowly have gotten back to normal but one thing has definitely changed: our tempo. The sudden onset of typhoid made the both of us learn how to slow things down on our trip. Before we seemed to always be on the move seeing one thing after another - but now, we seem to appreciate the time we have more. As my grandma has told me for years: without health, you have nothing.

Two days ...

Ubud - Cyber-geek buys a Cybershot

... on Bali only really needed about 3-4 fares a week to make enough money to live off - no wonder there are so many of them! ]

The rest of us had a pretty boring day in comparison. Sadly, Andy's camera decided to finally break on him after the re-occuring problems he had with it in Kuta (a reason we didn't have lots of awesome/funny clubbing pictures). Andy, Chris and I therefore spent a while walking around town trying to find a camera shop ...

temple homes and hiking volcanos

... decided to head down since it seemed like it would keep raining and besides one other group, Greg and I were the only ones to continue on. Once the rain died down again we set out to complete the hike. The rain had matted down the loose volcanic silt which many people like to ski down (my dad did this in New Zealand and said it was super fun) so instead of skiing/skidding down we sort of bounded in soft stuff. As we continued our hike we were able to ...

Goa Gajah

... the meat. But, the coconut wasn't ripe enough for us, the tender soft meat gave a googy texture upon eating it, like a thick chewy pudding. I had tried a coconut like this before, and I had also hated it before. We wanted the coconut with the thick meat to chew on for hours, almost like eating the bark of the tree itself. After this experience, I knew I wouldn't be as tempted to climb the coconut tree in our backyard- if I climbed it only to get such a rare fruit, it would ...

Air Asia Numptys

... a line not knowing why or when it would. There were no Air Asia staff at the gate which was pretty amazing given that the departure time had come and gone. People started to get very twitchy. Departure time was past with not so much as a loud speaker call or any info on the monitors. Many were catching international connections to Europe and America and one girl in particular was already crying. She was travelling home to France and had no money to buy another ...

Running to stand still

... for help, they don't freak out and look at you like you're asking them to build a rope ladder to Jupiter, even if it's a question they're not used to. They don't get flustered over details or try and get you to do things only their way. If you're coming from a rather abrupt and blunt country, like I am, this change is overwhelming. Bali in a sentence: It is a great joy just to know that a place like this exists.

Island of the Gods

... loud noise, wafts of exhaust fumes, incense, and smells from the many warungs (food stalls) serving up nasi goreng and other rice and noodle dishes....anything goes. Traffic is crazy, as any rules are quickly disregarded and motorbikes are everywhere, weaving in and out. The orderliness of the West a forgotten memory as I wandered into the chaos that is Kuta. Now, the art of negotiating is a craft that we in the West have long forgotten. In Bali, it is essential ...

Bali Part 1

We arrived into Bali late on a sunday night. It was around 10 O clock and we arrived into a warm temprature with no breeze and heavy bags.We actually met a couple of Auzzie guys who must have seen how hot and sweaty we were and they decided that they would help us find the hotel. After about half an hour of walking we finally found it. We washed and headed straight out. We met the lads again and treated them to ...
