... the fact that I'm not a fan of Indonesian men, especially not recently) but I felt that I ought to offer my bed to him given that he brought me home when he didn't have to (and the fact that it was lightning and would probably start to rain very soon) and I made him promise me that he would just go to sleep and not try anything on, which he agreed and luckily he did do just that and nothing else. So overall not a bad birthday!

... I find that they are overly cautious but after what happened yesterday I didn't want to take any risks.

On the speed boat back to Manado, I felt really disappointed with myself for not having seen the underwater volcano (which is apparently excellent for diving, but I'm not sure about snorkelling) and for not having seen any stunning scenary such as the stunning volcanoes or gone to do the world-class snorkelling but I felt it was for the best and hey, who knows, maybe ...

The jungles of North Sulawesi are home to many rare and exotic species and, like the famed British Explorer Alfred Wallace 150 years before me, I went in search of them. It was Wallace who first hypothosised that the flora and fauna were due to Sulawesi’s unique geographical location, between Asia and Australasia.

... and fried fish settling into a lively conversation with 2 other couples and 2 random dudes from Australia, Switzerland, Germany and Texas (which is not a country but seemed noteworthy…).

Back in the spider’s den we searched for babies (or the mother!). Relieved to find nothing, we turned on the fan and crawled into the mosquito netting on our bed hoping to escape the night from insect bite.
