Let me start by saying this was more of a science excursion than a camp...

Wednesday dawned bright and early...okay, well not really. Our journey began as school started at 9 am. How else do you travel when at a private school, but by luxury coach, of course! 38 students, 5 teachers, 3 parents (and a partridge in a pear tree) all excited to embark on a wonderful trip to the Abruzzo National Park.

It didn't take long for the Roman skyline ...

... imposing, fortified hilltop-villages and every now and then plunges us back almost to the seashore. Loads of tunnels to zoom through... Hilli not so keen on these! We book into the Bologna Novotel ('you can trust the carpets in a Novotel') and plan on finding somewhere nice to eat in the old city later. ... ways and sometimes in pedestrian tunnels where both shoulders nearly touch. At one point today the frontage road consolidated with the Autostrada, which does not allow bicycles, so we ended up doing a 20 kilometer detour to go 500 meters. All in, we pedaled 7 hours today for 83 kilometers. Food was particularly good, so I included ...

After yet another beautiful breakfast on the rooftop of our B&B, we caught the bus to Badia which is a small village just outside Sulmona. Our first stop was at the Morronese Abbey, which had a Baroque Church, and a chapel, both under restoration. We had a fabulous guide, who talked to us about the town, as well as life in Italy since the GFC, and how it feels to be living in an earthquake zone etc. Sulmona is just up the road from L'Aquila which ...
