Leaving Port Barton was less eventful than arriving; however, it was much more interesting. What stood out to me, again, was public transportation - it's just so interesting. More so than anywhere else I've been, loading a bus in the Philippines is like putting together a puzzle - there are so many interesting pieces of luggage that get fit inside …

Manilla

Checking into our flight for Manilla was by far one of the worst, if not the worst, experiences that I've ever had at a check-in counter. The Philippines grants tourists a 30-day VISA on arrival, but you are allowed to extend it once you get there. Our plan was to book our flights once we knew the general area in the country that we'd be flying out …

AVOID Manila at all costs

GET OUT OF MANILA as fast as you can
It's a great cheap ticket to get in to the Philippines, but the city itself is a horror story.. The streets are not safe, it's not welcoming to just walk around and enjoy the scenery (there is none).

We pulled up in a taxi from the airport (that overcharged us) but we took a van 'cause we were …

Manila, hmmm….

We are at a local restaurant – Aristocrat, close to the bay in Malate district of Manila. 7 a.m. – lots of people having breakfast make this place loud and crowded. On the way here we saw the morning picture of the city – tired prostitutions; hunting transvestites; homeless sleeping in the park and sidewalks; beggars; little …

Filipinos are happy, friendly people, even more so than the Thai. They laugh a lot. They are friendly and helpful, often offering help without being asked and not expecting payment most of the time. We did get one cling-on, Nick, for part of our time wandering near our hotel while we tried to familiarize ourselves with the area. He did point us to …

This place is gorgeous. Even if it costs slightly more than your typical budget place, it's still cheap and delivers MUCH MUCH more for the extra cash. We found other places to be sooo dirty and depressing but this place was brilliant.
