Beer & Music

... live music. It is at the castle overlooking the town. We assumed it was going for the afternoon (it is Saturday) but at 4, we are among the first dozen of people. The vast majority of the beer are the volume Pilsners from Macedonia and nearby countries. It is only $1. They have a couple of booths of premium beer. I have a Chimay Triple (Yummy!). We watch as they set up everything. A heavy metal band starts things off after an hour. The Fort makes a ...

Skopje?, As shit as everyone claims?

... Normally none of this would have phased me that much, except that it was 3am. It was cold, dark and I was completely lost. I walked to the crossroads and tried to find a street sign, to get my bearings on the map. However Skopje subscribes to the Balkan philosophy of not putting street signs up so even this didn't work. Bollocks. There wasn't even anyone around to ask for directions. I silently cursed Drity tours, the company who I'd travelled with ...

Last Week!!!

... He forgot about getting everyone else coffee and when he was asked about it- he told them that he had to "butter me up" for something. I don't know how the conversation got started but the joke became, but Sashe told me that I have to marry his brother for some reason. So, the joke was that I would marry Andreja and I would find someone for Beti. (Any takers???) No, just kidding...I think he got me the tea and no one else the coffee, because he just ...

... which obviously is little at this point, we only have access to half of the village to shoot. The other half doesnt want us there and will be very hostile. Thats all fine, but apparently this village is only like 30 people...) Oh, also Ill be sleeping in a camper with no running water or electricity for a few days. Going on another adventure tonight. Not sure where yet besides the local mall. Should be fun.

A laundry fiasco

... hour later he started yelling at me again. We went back and forth like this many times until his friends finally told him to just stop it already and let me keep the curtain closed. Finally, at 1am, after about 4 hours without power, the power returned and I was able to put my still mostly wet clothes into the dryer. I managed to get about 4 hours of sleep before I had to wake up to catch my bus. Not exactly a fun experience, but at least I had clean clothes.

Harmony and chaos

... course it is difficult to leave the kids, but I'm not their mother. I'm not unresplaceable. And now we got a new cool volunteer marie from France who is also working in the centre. She is cool and we are laughing all the time. On the breaks of course, only. The work is important but it cannot be everything. And even in the centre we have had lately problems. The teaching methods are really behavioristic and sometimes i have asked if we have to use those kind of ...

Leaving my earthquake stricken city

The other day the search machine took me to an entry by the most proliferate uncle_davros or whatever is his name. He packed his impressions of Skopje, mainly four-letter words and other ****. I was in Australia and can imagine the frustration people from DownUnder experience when globe-trotting. He never understood a thing about Skopje and I do not know why the heck he spends ...

Nordic girl in the southern world -culture shocks

... I travelled mainly by train to Macedonia stopping for example in Rome. It was great, that trip. I for example had a great boat trip from Bari to Bar, met talkative people in Montenegro, waited on the train in Nis for ages etc. The absolute highlight was to meet my ex-placement officer collegue Vida in Rome. Days with her in the parks of that lovely town were just so relaxing. We were laughing all the time, just as we had done in April in Bern . Vida is one of the ...
