F-F-F-FREEZING FILM FEST FUN!

Confirming my ever-strong belief in fate and allworking out eventually, we ended up in Morocco right on time for the 2009 Marrakech Film Festival! As film fanatics, we hot-well, actually cold-footed it-from freezing cold Casa to Marrakech making it just in time for films galore...

Getting back to the Western world is weird after adventures in African countries like Mali and Senegal as it seems so different yet only a drive-or even briefer flight ...

... and left to have your own adventure. Side trips can be taken but they aren’t always organized by the driver. The road conditions vary from paved, dirt, mud, and everything in the middle. Sometimes you wonder how it is physically possible to make it through the narrow passengers that our driver navigates or the streets full of people and parked cars. It puts Austin Powers to shame. But there is really no other way to see Africa, at least for me.

Freckled Woman With Henna

Marrakech is most definitely my favorite city thus far. I hate to say it is also one of the most touristy places we have visited thus far. I wonder if maybe I just found it comforting to see people in shorts and tank tops again. We stayed in a camp site full of the usual wild cats but with a twist, we had about a dozen Peacocks. Simply stunning. Happy were we to find the campsite equipped with hot water and western toilets, but I do believe that the Spanish may have had their ...

Drop Me Off in Africa!

... the best I have ever had in the 20 years I have lived on this planet! It was more amazing than I can say to eat something that I had helped prepare, that was also part of an animal that had been alive that morning. Our society has a complete lack of accountability with our meat, and I think that's a pity. The meat industry would not be what it is today if people had to watch the entire process. I ate that lamb lung and liver with the full knowledge that it came from an animal who had ...

Respect in the Form of a Sheep Head

Marrakech is the most cosmopolitan and developed city in Morocco. It is populated by the Moroccan elite, French retirees and celebrities. Marrakech has all of the usual suspects: a massive medina, a sprawling ville nouvelle and a luxurious palmerie filled not with farms, but with pricey homes. At the centre of Marrakech is the Djemaa el-Fna (literally translated as "Place of Death"), a giant square on the outskirts of the medina. In ancient ...

... eater - whole sheep's heads (eyeballs included). There are groups of Moroccan men sitting Indian style in large groups around storytellers listening wide-eyed to tales, all collectively sighing or laughing at the same time (kind of makes you wish you could speak Arabic just to understand what they are saying). Then, there is a ring of medicine men calling out to help cure your aliments, with all their antidotes displayed in front of them (antlers, ostrich eggs, toad's ...
