Tirana, Albania schwate... any of the action we all ran back across the no-mans land and into Albania again to watch the shootout, much to the annoyance of the immigration office but we just ignored his shouts of protest. After watching Turkey win the penalty shoot-out we all defiantly sauntered back across the border again and towards Greece. I would imagine that there are not many other countries in the world were you would get away with such behavior, id say you would be in danger of being shot anywhere else ...
Tirana, Albania talamarko... the bed and the bathroom. When she wasn't doing that she was sleeping, something Meg doesn't need to be sick to excel at. Me? Well, I did my best to make sure she took on water all the while reassuring her that she'll be fine in the morning (of course, I'd no idea if she would or not). I also spent some time working on this Travelogue and even got a lesson from the patient on the ins and outs of solitaire (yep, forever more there will be an interesting ...
Tiriana, Albania byrnedm... without wanting to amateurise (that's not even a word) this travelogue I'm just going to say goodbye, see you in Tirana and enjoy the pictures. Day 25 Observations (September 7th 2007) · No Normandy Make no mistake; the ferry from Bari to Durres was no Normandy (the ferry we took from Ireland to France some weeks ago). A misunderstanding buying the tickets meant we found ourselves with deck passage tickets, meaning we had no assigned bedding. Hey, we didn't ...
Durres, Albania byrnedmNow it is Friday, August 3rd, and Tammy and I are about to make the big trek through Albania. Tammy in her blog tells the story from her point of view in her blog, but I thought I would go ahead and type this one up entirely separate from my perspective. The previous evening in Kotor, Montenegro, after seeing an Indian performance ensemble (who I have actually seen before in the states, I think they are from New Mexico and travel ...
Tirana, Albania alexk1018... more than an insignificant country town when it was declared the capital post-World War I. The Italians helped build it up somewhat in the 20s and 30s, only to have it get ravaged at the end of World War II and then be almost completely rebuilt under the paranoid Communist regime. Tirana is undergoing a sort of economic rebirth though. It's certainly bustling with activity and people moving about. A number of modern, glass-and-tile buildings have popped up around the ...
Tirana, Albania xerius... War. The city became Albania's first national capital on March 7, 1913 under the brief rule of Prince William of Wied. During the First World War, the city was occupied by Italy in 1915 and by Austria-Hungary in 1916-1918. It was captured by the Allies in October 1918. Restored to Albanian sovereignty, Durrës became the country's temporary capital between 1918 and ...
Durres, Albania madhorace... What a view. We were out to find the amphitheatre our book had said was here. We eventually came across it but it was closed so the old gate guy told us to come back the next day. A wander round town told us that there wasn't much here. We walked along the promenade where there were rides for the kiddies and a jetty that we didn't go on. Lots of cafe/bar type places with plastic chairs and bbq's. Found some awesome baklava too. Our old Lonely Planet had said ...
Durres, Albania lucinate... Jacuzzi (not kinding), a Jesuit priest and talked about his community. During Communism, the church was converted to a movie theatre for 10 years...then converted back to a Catholic Church after liberation. Some noticeable things: 1. There were 4 servers doing lots of things that we did not understand...incense etc. 2. The whole Church was incensed at the Consecration. 3. Nice, friendly kiss of peace...shook a lot of hands. 4. Bread only for communion...all ...
