Cheapest wine on earth

After a 4 hour nap, I was woken by the breakfast bell. We had the choice of eggs or pancakes. Unfortunately Lindsey and I made the incorrect choice of pancakes. There were 3 small pancakes stacked, then cut in half. They also tasted as they just came out of the microwave instead of the griddle. It's not that my expectations were high, but it has been about 11 hours since we last ate, or maybe I was mad at myself since the eggs were a big hit with everyone else. The meal also came with a crois...

37th Best Restaurant in the World

We didn't get a wake up call this morning thinking that we would have no problem waking up in time for breakfast (which ended at 10). However at 10:15, the phone rang and it was the waiter at the restaurant wondering if we were coming down or if he should put the food away. We felt terrible that they kept the food out for us for so long, so I told them to just clear the food away. After waking Amy, we got ready and met JB and Lindsey, who enjoyed their breakfast on time (and made sure to tell...

Day 167 - SA, Stellenbosch - Truck Catch Up

Boo time to say goodbye to Cape Town. Kinda ready to leave but could also very easily spend another week or so just chilling and doing some of the things we were meant to do like Robben Island, visiting District Six, abseiling Table Mountain etc. Good excuse to come back. So we taxied to the slightly dodgy train station and jumped on the 1124 to Stellenbosch for the incredible price of R12 (less than a quid). Not bad for 1 ½ hr train ride...if only London was as cheap! Train was ...

Stellenbosch and Le Quartier Francais

... marshmallow The crayfish tail was beautiful. I found the prawn wafer an odd combination of fishiness and sweetness but Steve liked it and I don't like marshmallow anyway so that was strange but I did eat it all. I could have just eaten lots of the crayfish though! Franschhoek salmon trout tartare, avocado, beetroot, pineapple and ginger air Another strange one.The beetroot was a tuile (thin crisp) that went round the circumference of the salmon and avocado tian and the "air ...

Ohhh the wine

... with a sorbet course in between to cleanse the palate (just like we serve at home!). Presentation and service so incredible ($80). I had a free range chicken entree that was done like crispy duck and Dave tried springbok, which was like tender beef. I had creme brulee for dessert while skinny Dave looked on.Yum! Salad tonight.

Arrival in South Africa

... in Terminal 1 in Sydney we boarded QF 63 to Johannesburg. Dad and I scored the exit row in the upper deck cabin, which was great for getting in and out of our seats but turned out to be not so good at meal times because at both the lunch and dinner service our first choices for main course had gone - all the Brumbies players wanted beef and lamb! After 14 hours we landed in Johannesburg and ...

Allergic to Africa

... a nap, made necessary by a 4 am train ride home, we headed to a beautiful beach and walked all afternoon. Saturday we rented a car and went to visit the hot spots of Cape Town: We took a cable car to Table Mountain, had lunch at the Waterfront, and went to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope... Highlights on the day are also to many to mention, but the day started out a bit gloomy with thick grey clouds covering the mountain almost killing our plans to see the top, but rather than ...

Western Cape: Wine, Snow, and Flightless Birds

... t have teeth, but they don't just nuzzle the corn out of your hand, they attack the hand with a solid peck which sends half the corn flying. If you don't draw back, they'll keep up the aggressive pecking until they've eating a bit, and spread the rest all over the place. It's kinda like feeding a jack-hammer! So having learned all these trivia, it was time ride the big bird. They first toss a little canvas bag over the head ...

Eindelijk in het sonnige Suid Afrika

Daar hebben we heel even wat Rooibos thee gedronken ( lekker he mama?! ) De mensen zijn heel ...

Views and Penguins around the Cape

... etc, etc. I have never felt so unsafe. Reminded me of a real life Mel Gibson movie. In any event, one of the shopping highlights of Cape Town is called Century City. It was built only about 6 years ago and is a huge success I gather. Looked something like the West Edmonton Mall. On one side of the car I was getting glimpses of this shopping Mecca and on the other, I could see Table Mountain and its neighbours getting larger and larger. A strange juxtaposition particularly ...
