... we came across the Viceregal Lodge and Botanical Gardens. This was a huge mansion where the British Viceroy used to live during the summer. It also looked a lot like Wayne Manor from Batman! Inside the mansion, we enjoyed a guided tour of the mansion's grand impressive rooms. The mansion was now home to the Institute of Advanced Studies, where you needed a minimum of a Phd to study there!

  • Enjoyed a nice wander around the gardens of the mansion, where ...

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and has a history of being the old summer capital of India. The state and county officials would move into the hills in the summer to escape the heat and chill out in the mountains basically. This is the part of India I didn't even know existed. ... through it, and a small pumping station. I went up to the large sign next to this building and unexpectedly, it was a signboard with information about the Glen. So I was in the right place - but what a strange place for such a sign; why is it not at, or another one at, the start of the path?! I continued following the path and what goes down must go up, so it was a long uphill slog, particularly towards the end when ...

... to be in the middle of nowhere, so we eat at the station cafe which is actually really nice. We get a school dinner style set lunch on a tray with little compartments for under 50p – and it's actually quite nice!! Then we board our scenic train – we messed up big style though as we booked first class AC which we have read and heard is brilliant. You get food etc etc but just not on this train. We are on the dilapidated one. We do however have the carriage ...
