... let them off where you want. I eventually stopped to let Wade look at the fireworks and he couldn't believe how cheap they were. You could buy a whole box for $20 and some of the fireworks were like the size of mortar shells. It appears at certain times of the year it is a free for all with the fireworks in Tennessee. We talked to the guys that were selling them and they just do it over the holidays (one was a teacher) and they actually live in a tent that ...

... I'll have to turn around.' I end up in the centre of town. The buildings are old and I'm routed away because of a market that is happening in the main street. I wonder what buildings are original. Which structures survived the 47 days of shelling when the union army laid siege to this town. I made my way back and stop at the old forts. The view over the river is dominating. The course of the river has changed slightly as there was quite a predominant bend in the river here ...

... and red for CSA and there are also markers highlighting how far the USA soldiers got across the battlefield.

Its a 16 mile drive with lost of stops well signed, information boards and many short walks to get a better view.There was also a 'Crater' here to match Petersburg and I'd never heard of that before I came.

Bumped into a namesake who turned out to be a peer of WT Sherman.....

Would definitely go back to this one.....

... by the hundreds. Casinos have also taken their place on the river side and has helped with employment challenges. As in every city we've traveled this summer, Vicksburg had its share of shuttered buildings, proof that the economy hasn't recovered.

Okay, boys and girls, we are off to our next destination, namely Mobile, Alabama. Thank you for staying with us and enjoying the ride.
