Saturday August 9, 2014 Travel Day The day started off sunny and hot, but soon turned overcast as we headed south on US 65. Crossing Into Arkansas we continued south on US 65 and I-40 East into Little Rock. We did not stop but continued straight through the city on I-30 and then I-530 south to Pine Bluff. The elderly custodian must be a train enthusiast, as there are 2 neat model railway train displays which he took great delight in switching on to show us.

The next quest was to find coffee, and one of the 2 Casinos was the place we chose. There are 2 big casinos on the riverside, so this must be the local entertainment area!

I wonder where we'll have dinner?

Tomorrow we're off to Monticello in Arkansas.

... toast, in other words French toast! The coffee was warm. The chick who took our order was only there to chat to her girlfriend, so I hope Paul didn't leave a tip!

I was in a really bad mood by the time we came back to the motel, so thankfully I managed to calm down with a bottle of beer, then a nice chat with Ben.

... on some back wood roads and through some small towns. I noticed large high school buildings that were left abandoned. Boards on windows, grass unkept and once glorified football field left overgrown with weeds, stands and goal posts left to rust. Not to far in an elementary school was also in a similar state. What happens in a town to cause schools to shut down?

The landscape flattened out and there were signs of water everywhere. Swampy sections of land sat on the side ...

... and red for CSA and there are also markers highlighting how far the USA soldiers got across the battlefield.

Its a 16 mile drive with lost of stops well signed, information boards and many short walks to get a better view.There was also a 'Crater' here to match Petersburg and I'd never heard of that before I came.

Bumped into a namesake who turned out to be a peer of WT Sherman.....

Would definitely go back to this one.....
