The Magnolia was under contruction when my husband and I stayed there this past weekend. We were unaware of this when we made our reservation. When we walked in the sound of contruction and jack hammers was very loud. There was a "make shift" check in desk and the lady at the front desk was pretty rude. To get from their parking area to the elevators we had to walk through a construction zone where anyone there really should have been wearing hard hats. In our room the jackhammers outside our window were so loud that you could barely hear to talk on the phone. When I went down to ask to speak to a manager the front desk lady told me she'd have to have one call me. A short time later she called me up at our room and said that she called a manager and said that there is nothing that they would do for us because the rate we were paying was already discounted. She didn't even appologize. We were visiting from out of town and looking forward to a nice weekend together just relaxing at the hotel. Instead we had to leave right away to get away from the contruction and spend our day walking around downtown Omaha. The only good thing about this hotel is the location. It's close to a lot of things. This hotel is supposed to have a Colonial feel to it but really it's just very old and unkept. I won't ever stay there again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Loud construction makes for unpleasant stay
The hotel should be discounting the rooms during construction. I stayed at this hotel in October when it was still the Sheraton and it was fine, now that its the Magnolia, its a different story. This week I was in town with some friends for a concert. We paid $120 for a small standard room with two beds. The rooms need some updating but were mostly clean. One of the odder things about the room was that was giant amoire with a small 13 inch TV.
The lobby was torn apart with no signs indicating what areas are ok and I was yelled at by staff when I accidently went the wrong way. We tried to eat that the restaurant in the hotel, but after waiting for several minutes without being acknowledged, we opted for fast food.
The worst part about the stay was in the morning. We had not been told when we booked that there would be construction. We were not told upon check in that the noise would start so early in the morning. As I said earlier, we were in town for a concert and had a late night out. Needless it was a very rude awakening at 7am to hear the very loud racket of power tools and hammers. The noise continued none stop till we got ready to leave around 11am. We were not offered compensation for our unpleasant stay. I understand that the hotel wants to update their facilities, it is needed. But wouldn't it be wiser to to have the bulk of construction occur when guests are not still sleeping?
As I said, I've stayed here before and it was fine. I might give them another chance once construction is finished. But I refuse to stay there until that is complete. The location is nice and within walking distance of several areas in the Downtown area.
I stayed a whole week in January. The hotel is really nice and the rooms are beautiful. There is some updating to do, but they are working on it. My main complaint was with the climate control - it was freezing in the room - the heater was maxed out. Also, in this day and age it is ridiculous to not have free wireless (or even wired) internet access in a business oriented hotel. Also the airport shuttle is only an SUV that can handle 2, maybe 3, people and luggage.
Ok but lots of work to do!
I stayed at the new Magnoilia Omaha for two nights in January 2007. I think it has potential but the new company is going to have to pump in some dollars, to really fly. The room was comfortable and nicely appointed. I was shocked to hear how thin the walls were in this old buidling. My first night, I literally could hear every word of the gentleman in the next room. Sadly, he was not speaking that loud.
The staff was fairly friendly. Everyone pretty nice but no real standouts.
Beware late arrivals looking for a snack. Room Service ends at 10 and the Restaurant closes at 11. The cookies in the lobby saved the day, however.
One small thought was the staff uniforms are not very nice or professional. I could not understand the theme they were trying to project. To me they looked like a little carnivalish.
Withour substantial chages, I would lean toward not staying here again.
I was looking forward to this stay because this was supposed to be an historic hotel. However, since the hotel was supposedly being renovated, it lacked a lot of the niceities that a hotel of this caliber would have. The bathrooms were the most glaring negative of my stay. The sink had two large cracks in it and both it and the shower/tub were very aged. I had hardly any water pressue, and the tub did not want to drain. I did address this with the front desk, and they came in to fix it. The rooms were either too cold or too hot, i could never get it right. The quality of the towels were not as good as a one-star hotel, which was a disappointment.
I lost a prized bracelet there, and called the housekeeping manager to ask them to look and see if i had left it in my room. That was on December 20, 2006, and it is now January 22, 2007, and still nothing from them. I would not stay at this property unless i had no other choice in Omaha.
I have to praise the entire staff for the exceptional stay I had at the Magnolia Hotel Omaha, December 3-5, 2006. I was visiting Omaha for the first time in conjunction with the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference, held down the road at the Doubletree. From my first interaction with the Magnolia staff - calling from the airport to request a shuttle to the hotel - I was very impressed. The young woman who picked me up from the airport was extremely gracious and friendly, and provided a great deal of helpful information about the area - weather, restaurants, entertainment, etc. The quality of service I received from hotel staff continued to be top-notch throughout my stay. Every time I visited the front desk, the greeting was friendly and my needs were always met quickly and with a smile. The personal, friendly attitude that the staff brought to the hotel made my stay exceptionally enjoyable - enough to tell more than one person that it was probably the best hotel experience I've ever had. And this was only days after the transition from a Sheraton Hotel to the Magnolia, when one might expect at least some level of disorganization!What's more, this historic hotel was spotless, attractive, and the rooms were very comfortable. I was initially disappointed that I made my lodging reservations for this trip too late to get a room at the Doubletree, where my conference was held, but I certainly am glad that I wound up at the Magnolia.
