... to basilica. Ponferrada is the capital of the El Bierzo region which has a unique microclimate enabling good wine and fruit production. The cherry trees were all in full fruit and if you couldn't pick them as you went along, you could buy them in a twist of brown paper very cheaply.

Then in it all went a bit wrong. The book said to take care leaving the city as the signs weren't very good. Over a bridge and right. Only I was looking for ...

If you saw the movie ´The Way´, the fancy hotel the group stays at is the Parador in Leon. In Spain, a Parador is a present-day hotel converted from a former castle, palace or monastery. Here in León, the Parador Hostal San Marcos is one of Spain's finest Renaissance buildings. It was built in the 12th century as a hospital for pilgrims on the road to Santiago. Later it became a political prison, and now it's a 5-star hotel.

We knew to take the top bus stop to leave Lastres today, much much easier, and headed to Leon via Gijon, with ALSA once again. It was a picturesque drive yet again, along the coast, sometimes into the hills.
