John and Carol told me that a man had died on the first day out of St Jean Pied du Port a couple of days after we left there. The weather had been very bad and they found him in a refuge, having had a heart attack, they think.

... even the super fit Italian cyclists pushing their bikes today. A kind one took pity on me desperately trying to catch my breath in the scant bit of shade I found in a ditch, and offered me some cookies for a sugar boost.

Thankfully, my legs were not hurting today and they didn't feel like I was wearing ankle weights ... but holy ****, my bike feels like I'm carrying lead in the saddlebags!

... They are like old friends although the fact is that the common ground in this case is the Camino and perhaps that someone speaks their language.
