Friday 17/1
Up early and off to Montparnasse, narrowly avoiding a hefty fine for an invalid ticket (a foreign passport and puppy eyes does the trick), I found that the TGV I was planning to catch to Bordeaux was fully booked and I couldn’t even get a reservation. ... room snacks from a supermarket ,fruit, cheese, salmon etc. We then went to Bordeaux , where we found parking with difficulty. The centre is like any city, e.g. Oxford street. It had large buildings, parks, shopping centres ( like London ). We found an evening antique market in a park which was great but we never bought a thing! ... Todd and Rose to keep us company, we managed to find some pretty nice wines!

Bordeaux is about an hour away from the coastal town of Arcachon which is famous for its beautiful bay and sandy beach. Although it was too cold to get into the water the advantage of going in October was that the beach was pretty deserted and we could wander at our leisure.
