Greetings from Greece!

... at night. Our plan was then to take the night train to Athens, we got to the ticket window and the next available train was in 3 days. So we had to go to Plan B, try and find a bus. First step find the bus station. This was difficult because no one spoke English. We find the station and lucky there was a bus that left at midnight, we had just made it on time. Around 1030 the next day we finally arrived at our stop in Athens. The hostel was easy to find ...

Eleftherios Skilos (Free Dog)

... we hope Pat and Zoe are still looking forward to a few more trips with us. I have some other dogs too. At our air base we have about 25 strays. Three packs of about 7 or more dogs. A creek forms the territorial boundary for the packs. The east creek pack lives on the runway control tower side of the base with us and is made up of smaller and younger dogs. The West creek pack are mostly larger mature dogs and the North pack is made up of ...

Athens, Piraeus, and the Sea: Embarkation

... we had to fill out the health thing, which asks about your recent bowel activity (looking for signs of Noro virus). Our bowels were deemed worthy of admission. It was about noon at this point, and the rooms aren't ready till 1:30 so we headed to the Lido deck for lunch. We saw Lynn, so we sat with her in the smoking section. I won't be doing that again. I had a headache when I left. By the way, the crew is Indonesian, and so the stir fry is always a ...

Baby Turtle Beach Parade

... who need medical attention, and tag turtles for tracking research. I heard a few of my Persuasion students express interest in coming back to Greece some day to serve at one of the sea turtle rescue beach camps. They're having such a wonderful time in Greece that some of them are searching for different ways to extend their experience beyond just our program's three months, which seem to be slipping away so quickly.

... where I worked mostly one-on-one with professors rather than sitting in class: it's because I'm unfit to be a student in a regular classroom. I'm that obnoxious nerdy student the cool kids hate. I'm so excited to show the professor what I have worked so hard to already know, and I'm even more excited to learn from the professor all the amazing things I don't already know. I want to ask a million questions. I want to do extra work to learn more. I ...

Things That You Should Know About Greek Hotels

... beds are hard. 8. Bed coverings are highly insubstantial (one night when we set the A/C too low, I woke up freezing), but there are usually thicker ones in a cupboard or closet in your room. 9. Washcloths are not provided. If you like using one, bring it. 10. You can only count on a hair-dryer in an expensive hotel. Most hotels provide shampoo but they don't seem to have heard of conditioner; bring your own. 11 ...

Acropolis now! Wed, Thu

... We also saw some people shoot up in a park. Two blocks away was the cops. There is rubbish everywhere on the streets and so many abandoned cars and dust and dirt. So our first day in Athens was hot, filled with amazing sites and some not so amazing sites. On the whole though I like Athens, I think because its a 'real' city where you can see the people and how they live. Thursday 16 August So hot again today! One thing we notice is how much water we are going through. I think we have ...

POSITIVELY PEACEFUL PAROS

Yasoo again everyone. We are now in Paros; it was about a 45 minute ferry ride from Mykonos. The hotel is beautiful, charming and quaint. (didn't I say that about the last hotel - life is tough isn't it??). We have a lovely room overlooking the Agean Sea - port of Parikia. We have a lovely little balcony as well. Michael went for a long walk today (he misses the treadmill so he wants to walk a lot in the day). It was 45 ...

Athens, Greece

After an uneventful but comfortable plane ride, we finally arrive in Athens at 7:00pm - 3 hours past the scheduled arrival time. I had a nagging feeling something was wrong by the time we got to baggage pick up and lo and behold, one of our bags get left behind at Heathrow. Thank God it was Brian's luggage! They did manage to send it on the next plane to Athens and it should arrive the following morning by 8am - so they ...

Ancient Greece

... Jeremiah, a little buzzed, decided to treat the entire restaurant to bottles of Ouzo. This didn't make a big impact on the patrons but Alex, of Alexander the Greats, came over and began to give us personalized service. He took us under his wing and ordered a selection of things for us. Everything was delicious. Alex ended up sitting down with us and enjoying conversation with our table. It turned into ...
