We relented and visited Carlisle Castle on our way here to Windermere. It was another castle after all but with a slight difference in that it was beseiged by northern neighbours frequently. It was also a good place for morning tea before we headed out towards the western coast. We followed an AA car tour and thoroughly enjoyed Skinburness and the view to Dumfries and Galloway over very calm waters. We meandered down the coast calling in ...

... by very steep mountains again sprinkled with sheep with one leg shorter than the other! The reflections in the lake of the surrounding fields, mountains and homesteads reminded me of Sasi Lassies trip through the desert in Bolivia. It's called Betws-y-Coed (we always pronounce it Betsy Coed). We looked around then drove back to the ...

... dip our toes in the Irish Sea - it's very brisk and windy. The statue of St.Bega is located near the railway line (an Irish Princess who fled her native country when she refused to marry a Norwegian) she went on to build a convent and lived as a hermit. Lovely little legend to read. We walk past the St.Bees golf club...... Mmmmmmm very hilly. We arrive at the beach, so flat there are lots of rocks but also plenty of sand! I have selected my ...

... to Windermere, picked up the washing which was being done at the local laundrette (a real bonus), and booked back into The Westboune. A cruise on the lake was next on the agenda, so it was back down the hill to catch the Blue Cruise - 45 minutes around the lake taking in lots of interesting and scenic places. It was such a different perspective to see the area from the water. The ...
