Travel Blogs from York
So here is our super vague plan for the first few months of travel. The aim is to avoid air travel as much as possible!
7th November - fly into Bangkok, Thailand. Hang out for a few days in the city before spending a relaxing week on the beach near Koh Chang. Then back to Bangkok to hire a card and head north ...
Checked into our Uber Modern B&B in the old walled city of York. The friendly owner has gone all out in redecorating our room in a Japanese theme and electronics and buttons galore (press button shower, smart 3D TV, silent fridge etc). The old city has a myriad of narrow winding streets and 14th century houses and, of course Minster Cathedral, a sprawling example of a 13th century ...
... the end of one stage of my trip, and the beginning of another. Tomorrow I am off to Durham, where I will move into residence and enjoy 12 days of freshers activities. This will certainly change the frequency and tone of my blog. Expect less frequent posts, thinner entries and probably a lot more pictures. What won't change, however, is my commitment to keeping you posted on all of the big events here in England.
Keep on reading Canada!
...apart from my own of course... I have a few travel blogs that have inspired and informed me before our trip! http://gellipower.wordpress.com Gelli Power This blog is wrtten by my second cousin (once removed? twice removed? anyway...) documenting her 6 months living in the wilds of Wales. Their lifestyle could not be more back to basics but is so inpsiring becuase it is wonderfully simple (not ...
... stories the trees could tell, and see a Green figure running about in the forest hiding in the trees. Shame the tree needed supports for it branches but then if I was over 600 hundred years old, I' d need support too.
We changed bus drivers back to Ian for the London leg and headed down the motorway and into Cambridge, the university city. A city of ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Marmadukes Hotel York
I booked a 4 poster room at Marmadukes as a surprise to my husband for our anniversary, as we'd never stayed in one before.
Marmadukes is in a brilliant location for this beautiful city, all the staff have excellent customer service skills, they made us feel very welcome and comfortable.
Beatifully renovated, first class service.
Absolutely fantastic hotel, staff and food! This is an absolute must for anyone looking for high quality surroundings and very personable and professional staff, and just a stone's throw from City centre.
The room we stayed in was extremely comfortable, beautifully finished with no detail being left. We also have two small children who were also made very welcome which I find unusual in such surroundings.
This was my first visit to York, and the Hotel complimented the city perfectly and will have no hesitation in staying here again when I return.
Well done Marmadukes!
I stayed at Marmadukes for two days on business and I must say that I have never stayed anywhere that is so lovely. Everything about the place top quality - the furnishings, the beds, the lot. There is a broadband connection in your bedroom (that actually works and is high speed) which means that I could really get on with some work. Their Relaxation Room is brilliant and all incuded in the price. The bar is well stocked and very comfortable. Chris and Emma, the owners, go out of their way to make you feel welcome and relaxed. I have a contract in York which means that I can be at Marmadukes at least one day a week for the next 18 months!!! Well done and see you soon. David.
Great Hotel Clean. Friendly staff.Short walk from city centre.
We had a fantastic stay at this Hotel. we were greeted by a lovely young lady who, even though we were 1 1/2 hours early booked us in and showed us to our room. The room was beautiful. Very well decorated and exceptionally clean. Great 4 poster bed and pristine linen and towels. We would gladly recommend this Hotel to anyone as the standards are very high. It is a comfortable walk into York City Centre, 10 minutes at most along a pretty and historic road. The Hotel benefits from being on a side road and therefore is much quieter than other Hotels we have stopped in. SUPERB.
"WHAT A WONDERFUL HOTEL"....My partner Gordon and I have
We would recommend staying at this hotel in order to taste the Masham sausages and apple chutney....wonderful, although avoid the stale danish pastries at breakfast. the staff were friendly and helpful. We booked a double and a single room. The single was smaller than a broom cupboard although comfortable with an impressive shower. The double was a very lovely bright room filled (almost too much) with antique furniture and a most comfy double bed. The bathroom was nice too. I was surprised to find the hotel charged for bottled water in the room which seems excessive for a hotel of its quality. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
What a find! Marmadukes is small enough to pay attention to detail and out does all of the chain hotels with its high standards of furnishings, cleanliness and customer service. The beds are amazing - designed by a Warner Bros Prop maker - you'll be guaranteed a fabulous sleep. Only 10 mins walk from the walls, its quiet, luxurious and so reasonably priced - better and cheaper than the competition. Loved it.
I was looking for a small but sophisticated location for my pre-wedding celebration with close girlfriends (NOT a wild hen-party!) Marmadukes was a lucky find, in the increasingly fashionable Clifton area of York - an easy 10 minute stroll from York Centre (great in "flatties" but for evening stilettos a taxi may be needed). I booked all available rooms for my party of 10 almost as the paint was drying!
We had as lovely stay in Marmadukes Hotel in York. All of the rooms have recently been renovated and how lovely they are! We spoiled ourselves and stayed in a Four Poster Luxury room, the furniture was all sourced from English Manor houses and Palaces which lent the room a lovely old style feel. I relaxed every night in our claw foot bath, and watched DVD's lent from reception on the plasma screen TV in our room. The service was friendly and personal, with the staff doing everything they could to make us comfortable.
