My Birthday!!!!

After a long day of traveling we finally arrived in Tamarindo Costa Rica. The second we got to our room we immediately fell asleep due to extreme exhaustion! A few hour laters we woke up and went for a walk around the town and to the beach. This town is definitely right up our alley! There are many Americans and almost everyone is conversational in english. It seems like 80% of the people here are tourists which we don't mind at all! Well yesterday I turned 20! After all the traveling, I didn...

So we couldn´t pass our opportunity to see something that may not even be there for our children to see.

The first downside to this tour was the start time. The start time changes every day, depending on the tides, and when they think the turtles might come out. Our designated start time was 11:45. PM. Ikes! What´s worse, they were a little over a half hour late picking us up, so by the time we got ...

Life in Tamarindo

... Panama and eventually Argentina. 2 of the guys were from OC and had met the Capitan Max in Nicaragua. Max and ex-ski bum living in Jackson Hole decided to sell off all of his winter possessions and purchase a 27ft sailboat and take it from Oregon to Argentina. It also just happened that these guys were staying in the adjacent room next to me in the same hostel so we made plans to meet up and grab a few beers that night.

A Grand Reunion!

... Alex was playing a mean trick! Long story short, someone distracted Chad by asking about the game on TV and his partner snatched the bag!!! I would have liked to have seen their faces when they opened my "purse" and found nothing but tortillas, PB, and raisins!!! SUCKERS! Anyway, back to CR. On Sunday morning, Erin, Kelly, and I went to the volcano to go hiking. We hiked through really tall stalking ...

... America. We changed buses in Tilaran and again in Canas, where the landscape changed dramatically again to the flat, hot and dry cowboy country of Guanacaste. We got to the main town of Liberia around 3 and checked into Hotel Liberia on the restored colonial street of Call Real. We´ve stocked up on rum and noodles at the local Pali (a supermarket, not a dance hall) and tomorrow we´re heading to the beach.

Wildlife galore

... excited to see these ones. We passed some other howlers on the way up the stream, but not in good positions for viewing. Towards the end of the upstream stage of the cruise we came across three dogs barking at something in a tree. This bit of land was a farm, and the dogs were obviously farm dogs and on to something good. We cruised over to have a look and discovered that what they had bailed up was a raccoon, and he wasn't too happy about it either. The dogs ...

Surf trips

... I was alright but a little nervous. After the huge set that didn't happen again for 20 minutes or so, but the swell arrived! We went back to school and took a mid-day ciesta and then Peter, Jenna and I (Peter is a new surfer and Jenna just wanted to read) went to Playa Grande, and the swell was there but this beach had bad current and I would say 100 yds wide of the worst rip current I've ever seen! Crazy, so he paddles in to the right of the rip and I'm waxing my board, a ...

... US trade), but theoretically the canal is neutral territory and will remain open to all nations during both peace and war. It was quite an experience to watch the huge container ships being shepherded through the double locks at Miraflores. Ships are apparently constructed with the dimension of the canal in mind - 305 m long and 33.5 m wide - and close to 20,000 transits are made through the canal each year. It generally takes about 24 hours to ...
