... here is particularly strong. The house is walled with lime and sand (outside) and sieved red clay and sand (inside). the paths are free draining gravel. Two freshwater, if brackish, springs provide water. The horses dung and hoof clippings are dug into the veg patch. And the whole site has an air of quiet and contemplation but without the stagnant passivity this hot and dry landscape can induce! I had dismissed this beautiful corner of Portugal without a ...
We made it to Faro, our last stop on the southern shore of Algarve. Trying to avoid the concrete nightmare and crowds of Albufeira beaches, we drove slightly to the east to reach a 3km stretch of white sand called Praia da Falesia. Still pretty busy, but as people were spread out it wasn't so bad, and the water was the warmest so far (maybe ...
Quiet day today, as we had to find a place to watch the France - Germany game before 5. In hindsight I'm not so sure why we bothered, the game was largely soporiphic. The only comfort is that the Portuguese seemed to be rooting for us, thanks guys! But anyways the campsite is nice and family oriented, the swimming pool is big, and ...
So that's where all the tourists went. To the south coast of Algarve. Mind you, I can understand them, the beaches are certainly pretty here in Lagos, and the historic town center does have a lot of character (and restaurants). It's just that the contrast with the empty campgrounds of west Alentejo and Vicentine coast is pretty extreme. The beaches here are already pretty packed, even tough the water is still seriously freezing. It didn't stop us this time ...
Day 1- Arrive into Lagos on the 13th by bus (4.5 hours). When we arrive at the Rising cock we realise it's 99% Australians, even the people that work there. Staying in an 11 bed dorm, all the other girls are from Sydney. Get ready and go see Marty at his work, the green room. We go to the tavern to watch the World Cup, three ...

Perola do Algarve
I arrived home from Perola six days ago and am miserable to be back at work!
I booked our holiday on the internet so didnt have a clear picture of the hotel. When the coach first pulled up outside perola I was very disappointed as it was further out than I had thought and appeared to be very run down from the outside.
However please do not let this put you off as the inside was a vast improvement. The rooms were very clean and very big! I cant comment on the food as we ate out all the time. If you are a fan of pasta go to Lizas restaurant or if Indians more your cup of tea then try the Clay Oven. Get there before 8 otherwise you may be in for a wait for a table. But the food is fantasic.
The pool at perola is quite small and tends to be in the shade as of about 2pm. But the beach is a twenty minute walk away and is very lovely. If you dont like the thought of walking you can always get the tourist train, a cab for about 3 euros or the hotel runs a bus service once a day to fishermans beach although that tends to be busier.
The strip is also about 20 mins away and very lively especially for young people. I'm 20 and went with my sister and cousin for a girly holiday and we really enjoyed ourselves. Please try out the Garage club as it plays all the cheesy classics! We also fell in love with Derek the DJ at Paradise bar. He's only 18 (bless him!) but has a fabulous singing voice.
I would definately go back to Albufeira and would consider staying at the Perola again but the outside definatley needs a lick of paint!!!
After reading the reviews I was dreading going to this place as some were very negative. I have to say when we arrived the entrance wasn't as bad as it was made out, in fact quite the opposite it was very nice, reception and their staff excellent. The supermarket yes was close but what an advantage that was. All in all I really don't know why I was concerned, it was one of the cleanest, friendliest and loveliest places we have stayed. There was my father, 10 month old baby, myself and husband. The accommodation is excellent, very very well equiped even provided us with a high chair at no extra cost, I have never been to a place where they have provided ironing boards in the rooms. The kitchen had everything you need in fact even a tablecloth and tea towel as well as corkscrew!!! Our rep Kate was there what seemed like 24/7 and was always on hand to help with anything we needed. We travelled with First Choice and I would definitley go there with them again and to this place. The location is fabulous 10 minutes to the old town and 10 minutes to the strip, it has lovely views over the pool and either sea or hill depending which side you are on. The rooms are spotless, cleaned every day and beds changed 3 times a week. The staff are very very helpful and friendly and people shouldn't be put off by some of the negativity they read. The bins at the supermarket did smell a bit, but you couldn't see them and just cross over the road they are no where near the hotel and who goes away to sniff out bins. The pool and gardens were spotless and I would say this place is a 4* plus. Go and enjoy. We did.
Christmas to forget
We stayed at the Perola Do Argalve over the Christmas period through First Choice Travel and it will most certainly be the last choice for both. The food was abysmal, poor choice, usually 45 minutes between courses, and just about warm. The brochure (First Choice) states live entertainment, which turned out to be table tennis and karaoki. The leisure facilities were closed throughout our stay. It was so bad that one evening the tour rep was surrounded by over twenty guests, some holding plates of food, demanding to be moved. I took photographs because it was so amusing. We were all moved to another hotel after some four days. We are still fighting for some form of compensation from First Choice, especially as this was during the festive break. I can supply photos and names and addresses of other guests, and the First Choice people involved, at the resort and here back in the UK.
We spent our honeymoon at the perola, and really have no complaints.Everywhere was clean, the staff couldnt do more for you, food was ideal and the night entertainment was good fun.
As for the dog,it was a beautiful rottweiller, who did'nt make a peep the whole 2 weeks.
We would definetley go back.
we stayed at the perola for a week in july with my 2 kids .... yes there is a dog but no itn doesnt bark all day and night !! and what can the hotel do about a dog thats nothing to do with them ...it lives in some apartments opposite !!!! its the best holiday we have had. good clean accomodation, exellent staff it was just a shame we had to come home ....cant wait to go back
We stayed here for 2 weeks, there was a big dog about 10 yards away from the apartments chained up in a garden 24-7. This dog continuesly barked all through the night and mostly through the day. You could not sleep at night as this dog would bark from about 1.00 to 7.30 in the morning. We was not getting up untill 1 or 2 in the afternoon missing half our day. We complained 10 times as well as many other guests. But they did not do any thing to solve the problem. we was aways tired and stressed out we asked to be moved but they could not help us, we could not wait untill we got home. so if your looking for a relaxed holiday forget it. you have been warned.
I had the best time
I have just come back from a week at the Perola do Algarve and I have only good things to say about this hotel. There weren't too many people there at this time of year so we had so much to ourselves - the lovely garden and the health club especially the jacuzzi (all free of charge to residents). The staff were lovely, in particular the staff in the bar, where we spent some brilliant evenings drinking cocktails and talking into the early hours. The room was nice - not massive but fine. The maid came in every day but Tuesday, the water was always hot and the room was very clean. The only bad thing was that the balcony was too small - and that would be my only complaint! I loved it here and would definitely go back again - even though Albufeira would probably not be my Number 1 choice of holiday destination and I would definitely not like to be there in July or August. Highly recommended!
The Perola do algarve is a smashng hotel with friendly staff. The room we stayed in was large and clean with a pool view.As we stayed in April it was not at all busy and we managed to get the same seat in the bar every night to watch some fairly good low key entertainment. The hotel is close to the modelo supermarket and there are places to eat nearby (mcDonalds and pizza hut for any kids not willing to try portugese food!!!). We only ate in the hotel restaurant once and were not overly impressed with the food they also dont cater well for vegetarians but the old town about 10 mins walk away has some smashing places to eat.
I read many of the reviews before travelling to this hotel, both good and bad. Here is my opinion!!
I thought the hotel was clean, tidy and modern. The location is fine - about 10 - 15 minutes walk from either The Strip or the old town at a modest pace. There are two large supermarkets and a KFC and McDonalds all within a three minute walk.
The hotel has an excellent swimming pool and poolside bar. The prices were very reasonable though more expensive than in the Old Town or the Strip.
The rooms were tidy and regularly cleaned - they are also huge by Spanish/Greek standards!! All of the rooms offer a pool view, some of which also offer a sea view. The rooms are furnished with all the pots and pans you would need. True, we didn;t get a kettle either so, guess what? We used a saucepan - easy!! My only critisism woul;d be that some of the rooms on the second floor are directly below the reception lobby that has a tiled marble floor. This echos badly when kids are running about late in the evening or early morning - and when women with high heels are walking in there!!
I would certainly recommend this hotel - I went with First Choice travel company but am looking if I can book privatley.
Best holiday ever
Just got back from a one month holiday in Albufeira, already getting ready to book for two months next year. Loved the country, the people, the food, the wine, EVERYTHING! The Perola was perfect;clean, the staff bending over backwards to help. No problems whatsoever! We are totally enamoured with everything. Our favourite restaurant was the Cais Velho on Fisherman's Beach. The staff (Luis, Wallace, Alex & Julie [to say nothing of the Boss & his wife Anna] were great, as was the food. See you next year.Adeus e obrigado. - IAN RAYBURN
