... where we were told there were bears and many, many snakes, but they were much more scared of us than we were of them. Antony gave us a bit of a lesson about the lights, which occur when the solar wind reacts with Earth's magnetic field. Finnish tradition has it that the lights are a result of a firefox touching the snow with his tail, sending sparks into the air. In Greenland they believe it is dead people playing football (soccer) with a walrus head for a ...

... was Umea, which was a fair distance away, I would still take an hour long detour to see Santa's Village in the Arctic Circle, one of the major tourist attractions of Finland. I'm sure it's amazing in winter when there's snow everywhere, but even still it was pretty good with lots of little cafes and tourist shops. Just across the Arctic Circle marker is "Santa's Place" and saying hello to Santa is free so why not? Unfortunately you're not allowed ...

The bus left promptly at 10.50. The Parade (National holiday parade) was taking place as we went through Haparanda - the part we saw was all the cars of 1950s early 60s vintage (I'll come back to this later in Stockholm). Didn't take a lot of notice - but I did see them! Not enough time to get a photo - the bus was ...

      ... walk into town!

We crossed the massive bridge into town and the river under it was completely frozen, bar a few pools of turbulent water. We walked along gazing upon all the Christmas lights that illuminated the main street. Finally we found somewhere for dinner and after we booked a snowmobile, husky and reindeer safari for Wednesday! AWESOME!

We finished our day by walking home and hitting the sack, excited little kids to see Santa tomorrow!

The trip with student union to Lapland was different. First of all, I actually went alone, because there were 3 trips, but my Erasmus' friends got into different groups than I did. But this trip was so cool, and I am happy I didn't get afraid and I didn't quit, just because I was alone.
From the place we lived to Lapland is looong way. First we took overnight train (first time in my life) and then bus, by witch we ...
