        ... bank at the camping ground across the river. We came back to the hotel for an afternoon nap, and then had pizza from the local shop, I had smocked reindeer meat with tomato, cheese on a rye crust and Peter had regular meat pizza. We ate it sitting by the river, until the moxie so started to bother us. Then back to the hotel to plan tomorrow' activities ...

        I sought out the "Arktikum" where I spent a few hours viewing a variety of exhibits. There was a dark room where the audience could lay down and view a simulation of the aurora borealis. Many displays were dedicated to the fragility of the arctic environment and the threat that pollution poses. The indigenous peoples of the arctic including Inuit and the local Sami were described and their role in ongoing development stressed.

        Arrived in Rovaniemi after a good sleep at 7.52am - pitch dark, lots of snow and snowing. Kids very excited at the sight of snow and visit to Santa park. O initially thought the Rovaniemi train station was Father Christmas' house. We all loaded into 2 cars, scraped snow and frost from windscreens and headed to a shopping Centre to buy groceries. Grocery shopping when 95% of all packaging information is in Finnish takes materially longer than you hope it would be. ...

        ... it was because he ages differently. We went from the jolly man himself to the reindeer which pull his sleigh. I was very relieved to hear everyone was present and accounted for after we dined on reindeer last night. Only five were in the yard at the time, including a young two-year-old and a white reindeer, which is so rare that only one in 1000 are that colour. We were given food to feed them and the baby made our acquaintance very quickly, eating most of what we had to ...
