After the 5 hour bus ride I was ready to walk a bit. I checked back into the Lucky Ro hotel where I had previously stayed, grabbed my camera and was off to find the man who made cleavers, knives, and sickles from old car springs. I was successfull! He remembered me and gave me the tour of his mini factory. I took several pictures which I just printed and I plan on taking him a copy before I leave tomorrow. OH. I probably shouldn't tell you as Karen would just roll her eyes, but I thought I wo...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia gymwhite... paid a decent wad of cash to everyone that played a role in that experience, including the gate attendant. The ride back was quick, the money was handed over, and we got back into the tuk tuk. A lunch of pho was had as we got back into town, then it was off to the Russian Market, which was lackluster, then off to rest. We went out that night to a cool little bar/restaurant on the second story of a building at Riverside. Terry dominated us at pool as we had some drinks over good ...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia tex25... understand that it wasn't nervousness but frustration and confusion that had pushed me close to tears. So if anything it cleared the air about the new kids and my apprehension as well as giving Maan and I a chance to sit and talk about something other than the weather. I feel a whole lot better about my new extended host family, it's definitely an unusual setup and I can only hope that the mysterious girl will smile at me once, just once; or at least tell me her name.
Prey Veng, Cambodia ckulenguski... in the playgrounds; that had be used as a torturing device. There are very grotesque pictures on the wall of dead prisoners, prisoners being tortured and mug shots of everyone that entered S21. The rooms formally used as classrooms had been turned into holding cells about 1x2 metres small. There was also a board outside which listed all of the rules that had been enforced to every inmate.

Not a very fun day, but an interesting one.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia danandkate... Museum, the Russian Market, and the Vietnamese and Laos embassies to get information about visas to both countries. We spent Friday morning researching our travel options. At that point, we kind of stalled out: due to a recent typhoon that flooded large parts of central Vietnam and southern Laos, we weren’t sure what travel conditions were like in those areas. We wanted to head to one of those two countries, but we weren’t sure which. Complicating matters, we ...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia mcmactravels... around Phnom Penh (a stupid thing to do really, crossing the road is lethal..) and saw a couple of Wats. Wat Ounalom seemed to be a working Wat more interested in teaching buddhism than in tourists - which to be honest, makes a change. We ended up stumbling through the wrong door on to a ceremony and then asked to go round the otherside, where one of the monks was nice enough to give us our own little tour of the inner-Wat. After stopping for a few drinks, we then ...

Phnom Penh, Cambodia awfullook... babies that were kept there & killed during the regime and its genocide. The same day we went to the killing fields outside PP> This includes a tall pagoda type building with hundreds of human skulls inside & a tree with a sign stating it was used to swing babies against to kill them to save on the bullets. Not pleasant I can assure you.

We also arranged tattoos. Unfortunately deanos design was pinched so he couldn't get it done, much ...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia newmansinasia... had a nice vibe albeit a little bit seedy.

We spent the night in a hotel which clearly doubled as a knocking shop with its full length mirors, kareoke machines and "massage room". But the air conditioning was was very much appreciated.

In the morning we caught the bus to Siem Reap. More from Phnom Penh later.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia morris_cjm... somethng that everyone has to see, theres a whole generation missing, a lot of hurt and anger and yet on the outside and back in PP you can see how people have built there lives up again. From there we headed back to PP the closer we got the lighter my mood although 7 months on its still with us and I know I havent written a lot about but i really dont think i could do it justice. <br ...
