April 19th 5th installment Today we have another great breakfast at the hotel restaurant. We like the buffet breakfast with the opportunity to choose either European style food or Indian food. We usually go for the exotic Indian, although we are still learning the names and flavors. Returned to the room and packed our things (getting more difficult to do as we are accumulating), preparing for the trip to Bodagaya. At 10 am the guides arrive and we launch our attack on the Varanasi traffic. A...
Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India juanitobosqueApril 20, 2009 6th installment In order to beat the heat and the crowds we walk to the main temple at 6:30 in the AM. It is already getting light and the air is around 70 degrees. We quickly passed the gauntlet of beggars and hawkers, most of which are just stirring awake. Inside the temple we pay our 20 rupee camera fee (about 40 cents) and enter the grounds. After saying no to one young guide we were approached by another and decided to pay his fee of 200 rupees for a tour of the temple. It...
Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India juanitobosque... doing who knows what amongst the sea of bodies. Moments like that are the sort of thing that set India apart from anywhere else I have ever been in the world.

Finding a hotel at that ungodly hour proved to be a nightmare. I hired a rickshaw driver to take me around to five different hotels. Three of them (after the front desk person was awakened) claimed they had no more rooms. Two never even answered the knocks and shouts. Up to this ...
Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India nomadic1... those around us. From what I understand, Buddhism isn't a religion as such, more a way of life, a way of viewing the world and a persons place within it. In my opinion it is a corrupting, church-like system and so I can fully appreciate those that follow and adhere to it. If we had had time we would have visited other sacred Buddhist sites, but alas, time was against us and so we made do with this little foray.

XXX

Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India thedidgeridude... station where we got our night train to Jaipur. Udaipur is definitly one of the places I want to go back to in India. We arrived in Jaipur in the morning as usual. We like to take night trains because you can sleep, its not a waste of day, and it's transportation and accomadation in one. It's always wierd coming into a new city though for sunrise. We always end up sleeping half the day anway though cause we never really sleep the whole night on the train. We stayed at a place called ...
Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India alenashure... was created as a meditative mandala. With that in mind, I greatly look forward to seeing more in Bhutan first hand. So with that, I'm leaving India. It was a trip to say the least! Some refer to India - I.N.D.I.A. - as standing for I'll Never Do It Again!! From this experience, I'm left thinking - When Can I Do It Again?! ;) Sending love and off to Bhutan tomorrow (I've attached my itinerary to the pics) We'll see where this next chapter in our adventure takes us... Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India travelingamanda... I don't know - it sounds like she was jealous of her husband spending so much time with it, but that sounds rather ridiculous). Ashoka's daughter, Sanghamitta, snuck a sapling of the tree and secretly brought it to Sri Lanka where it was replanted. What grows here now on the site is a cutting of that tree that was carried back to Bodhgaya. http://www.ebudhaindia.com/holy_sites/b odhi_tree.htm The temple is magnificent, though has a number of neon lights on it which makes ...
Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India travelingamanda... I thought Sarnath was cool for its multi-culturism, this place is similar, but everything is on a much grander scale. Apart from having large temples from countries around the world, it also houses a huge monument and gardens, beside and surrounding the Bodhi tree. Unfortunatly, the tree that lives here is not the same one from over 2000 years ago that Buddha himself sat under, but a ...

Based on their current levels there's no reason why any of the students won't eventually become scientists, doctors, and engineers; the aspirations most of them voiced. On my final day I was speaking with Nikesh who was suffering with the flu. "Why don't you go home and lay down?" He thanked me for teaching (for the millionth time) and I handed him a small donation. He struggled with his obvious illness to write out the receipt and gave his usual bow.

After thus spending forty-nine days meditating close to the seat of enlightenment, the Buddha left Bodhgaya on foot to meet the five ascetics at Benares in order to turn the first wheel of Dharma. This accomplished, he returned briefly to Uruvela and introduced the three brothers - Uruvela, Gaya and Nadi Kasyapa - to his teachings. They developed faith in the Buddha and ...
