Starting my second week at the School of the World

... cool off with a dip in the ocean in the middle of the day... I've completely forgotton what it's like to be cold, even at 8am you walk outside and instantly start sweating! The only downside about going in the water around here is the frequent jellyfish stings you'll undoubtedly receive, which make your skin itch, then tingle, then go slightly numb; fortunately this rather unpleasant effect wears off after a couple of hours!

Costa Rica again

... into the luggage rack and smashed his head a couple of times....Deb just flew around the seat on the other side of me grabbing whatever she could. So that gives you a picture of the roads....or maybe a feel for them. We're traveling right at the end of the rainy season in Central America which is better than traveling in the middle of it...but that doesn't mean that it won't rain REALLY hard in October....and the night before, it did! Oh! I forgot to mention that the ...

The Sun still exists!

For nearly 2 weeks now we have been getting up at crack of dawn (5am approx) in order to visit national parks early and see the animals. However, given the bad weather conditions suffered we decided to sleep in at least until 9am. Sod's Law! It stopped raining during the night and the sun is strong as ever.... In any case it was good that we didnt rush into the car to drive back towards Jaco as the roads are slow due to mud and overflowing water, and bridges ...

Costa Rica... the end of the voyage

As we arrived in port and got off the ship I went with a group of friends to a beach town not too far from the port called, Jaco. There was much more to do and see here as opposed to Puntarenas. We rented several condo-type rooms that sat right on the beach. I was happy to see the use of Spanish again; finally I had some ability to communicate with the locals. We got off the ship nice and early and had plenty of time to check in and we were able ...

... approached one and really overcame her fear of wild animals. The cows were not feeling particularly social and distanced themselves from us the minute we approached them with love, or in Eider's case, with a stick! Once on top, we sat on rocks and enjoyed the beautifully breathtaking views. We could have sat there for hours, gazing at the mountains of ...

... It is times like this that you try as best you can to communicate no matter how stupid you look. He was as excited as I was but since we both didnt speak much of each other's language the conversation that ensued was pretty funny. I described it to him in the Spanish and he conveyed to me that if it pica my leg I go to Clinica. No Bueno for me. He then demontrated that if I went after it with a rake it would pica but if I stood a far it ...

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

We take a 4 hour bus journey through the cloud forests, breathtaking views, clouds dropping in front of us, The roads are crazy here, trucks speed past at unbelievable pace shaving the sides of the bus. Arrive late, we get more hassle, with locals trying to rob us, its a royal pain in the ass having to put up with this ****. Some kind lady picks us up and drops us to our hotel. We are staying in a pretty cabana overlooking the ocean, a hammock on the porch, and the garden is ...

... completely shut all the time and my hand cupped over it for backup. Luckily my left eye had been spared, but still, I´ve never tripped so much in my life; I will never take my depth perception for granted again. After enough strange looks from the locals I was finally able to feel my way into a store and buy a new pair of sunglasses. My eyes have since began to recover (after a brief relapse when I hit the surf ...

... what they are doing, it sucks!" I grin and see the guests face becoming redder, he still doesnt move or say a thing, he just continues to stare at his beloved Buckethead perhaps hoping he will save him from this embaressment. He certainly looked like he was craving that bucket over his own head. "you know, if I hear much more of this ****, I am gonna have to take some more of my pills off schedule, because the voices in my head are saying bad things, loudly!" Still no reaction from the ...

a Nicaraguan diary

... A little boy taps me on the knee and asks if he can have what is left. This is the first time i have encountered the poor. The cities have lots. It sucks. The people in the campo live in what we would consider incredibly poor like conditions. But they are not poor for "their" life. It is just the passed down traditional way of living. For example I have seen dirt floor homes with palm leaf roofs with new fridges and gas stoves inside. Everyone has what "they ...
