The other two tours in Madeira and Lanzzarrotte we planned well in advance, but the trip to Santiago de Compostela was a last minute decision based on the recommendation of the two couples who we had the pleasure of dining with on the cruise. I'm glad we decided to go. It was quite a long drive, but well worth the effort. We walked around the oldest part of the town where the ...

Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain sinfronteras... the city which contains all the old buildings and churches is pedestrianised and huddles round the grand cathedral. The Cathedral is vast and very ornate. The guide books say that is best seen in the rain so that all the lichens and mosses are highlighted. The weather duly obliged!

The car has decided to have a sick day and has gone to the Ford dealer to recuperate! We collect it tonight and move on to Portugal in the morning.

Melide, Galicia, Spain and Canary Islands camino_2009... dessert crepe, and then naturally, some more coffee.... As we were eating and drinking, there was a street jazz musician sitting in the square playing music. Otherwise, the plaza was completely quiet, there was a gentle breeze, a few puffy clouds in the sky, and a giant, beautiful church presiding over this square. At this moment, we realized... this was about as European Perfect as it gets.

We finally left the restaurant after about 3 hours and went window ...
Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain and Canary Islands deena.cowans... for dinner Spanish time, so we planned on just getting drinks. However, the place we sat at ended up giving us a plate with lots of pieces of boob cheese and 2 large empanadas, and another plate with 2 slices of cake, plus free drinks, so we ended up staying there for a while. Around 10:30, we met up with the other 3 girls and walked around for a while, looking for somewhere to have a bottle of wine and talk for a while. However, this turned out to be a much more complicated ...
Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain and Canary Islands deena.cowansOh man, the bus ride to Santiago was not fun but it had to be done. couldnt find any towns or cities that I wanted to stop at along the way but the scenery was definitely beautiful. So I had never heard of El Camino before I got to the north of Spain but Santiago is full of backpackers pilgri,s that hike for over two months from France to Santiago, pretty crazy and Im still not ompletely sure why. Obvously there are people that do it for religous reasons but I met some people ...
Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain and Canary Islands ckulenguskiThe 0630 coach leaving Oviedo for Santiago wasn´t exactly brimming with pilgrims. A group of Arabic gentlemen had, much to our delight, discovered the Baila el Chiki Chiki ringtone. A couple of young women on their way back from the football in Santander were topping up their sleep and their vino levels alternately using one of those ´souvenir´ wine bottles made of cow - I´ve just been told they´re called ´bota ...
Santiago de Compostela, Spain and Canary Islands warmWell, Happy Saturday! I finally decided to stay in town for a weekend because Monday we take a group trip to Andalucia! (I have so many trips coming up! I'm so excited!) Anyway, I just thought I'd share with everyone that I participated in my second stage of self induced torture ...
Santiago de Compostela, Spain amybing... narrow, overgrown path which takes us through to the next street. We draw another blank before finding a landmark which is on the guide book map, and get into the city proper. It looks pretty good, real mediaeval Europe, with lots of crooked cobbled streets, little plazas, and stone buildings. We found our hotel, rang the bell to get in, and check in, confirming that we will leave the bags for a week. Check out our small "spacious" room, with double bed, bathroom ...
