Longdu Xiamen

Xiamen was a typical Chinese city. It was not very interesting really. About the only exciting thing that happened took place in a local department store. We were on the third floor looking for a few things that we needed back on the ship, and Cub couldn't find a bathroom. We must have asked a half dozen store clerks and none ...

We requested a later lunch and ended up in a local restaurant where they had a fridge full of goodies and so really enjoyed prawns, squid, a local fish asnd a special soup ("expensive", says the guide) made of wild pig. Quite tasty.

Then driving back we stopped for these big bananas! The roadside vendor would not let Nancy buy just a few - she had to buy a whole hand of maybe 30 huge bananas! Though not as huge as she said they were certainly about 10 ...

After a 3 hour drive along the coast into Fujian province, we arrive in another Special Economic Zone - Xiamen. This one's a little different in that it was previously the treaty port of Amoy and there is a small island offshore called Gulang Yu which was a colonial concession

It seems that building a subway system was going to be too complex so instead they have installed a whole network of over-head bridges that are just used by buses, which serve the entire city and reach out as far as Jimei.
