Dag 9, 10 - Hoi An: Shop till you drop

Aaahhh!

My Son temples

This morning we woke up really late then caught a cab to some temple ruins in a nearby valley called My Son. The temples weren’t very impressive after seeing Angkor Wat, but they were still pretty cool. The surrounding mountain scenery was the main highlight. We explored the ruins for about two hours then headed back to town.

When we got back, Tom and I went to the tailor to try on our suits. The tailors did an amazing job! Tom’s suit looked exactly like the picture he had...

Tailors galore

Today the three of us switched to a more centrally located hotel. Mark wandered off to walk around town while Tom and I went to a tailor to get some custom-made suits. Hoi An is famous for its tailors, the town has a population of only 120,000 but it has over 200 tailors. It is by far, the best place to get a suit in SE Asia. I wanted to get two business suits since I’m graduating in December. Tom on the other hand, already had plenty of suits but he wanted a “joke suit”. He...

Haircut in Hanoi, Tailors in Hoi-Anh

Saturday in Hanoi, we are out early morning for a walk in the old district when I spot a barber shop, the woman hairdresser invites us in for a drink while she finishes the current client, we have a discussion in broken english and mime with the elderly mother who keeps offering us fruit and biscuits and drink. Now it is my turn, the hairdresser has limited english but her teenage daughter interprets for me. Very delicately and carefully she cuts my hair, then when she is finished I mime a mo...

Enjoying the calm before the storm

We took the sleeper train to Danang, and are now staying in Hoi An, at the Thanh Xuan Hotel. A typhoon is threatening to strike any day now, but so far, the weather's quite pleasant. Danang appears to be quite a wealthy town, with plenty of expensive cognac and whiskey on display. Tourists don't seem to stay here though. Like us, they move on to Hoi An, a mere 30 minute drive away. We had a hard time finding a 4-wheel taxi to take us to Hoi An, so we had to call and ask the hotel to send a dr...

End of Nha Trang on to Hoi An

After a couple more days of fun in Nha Trang we have now been in Hoi An for a couple days and are heading out to Ha Noi tomorrow morning. The end of Nha Trang was quite a gong show. We went on A boat Cruise on our second last day and spent the entire day island hopping, floating around in inner tubes with drinks in hand. There was even a floating bar at one point where one of the guys from the boat set up shop with crate of red wine, so you could float about and just head over for a re-fill. ...

Sonia's birthday in Hoi An

The process of choosing a hotel for Sonia's birthday was extended and elaborate as she carefully read up on all of the luxury resorts in the area. After much deliberation she chose the most expensive - Hoi An Life Resort and arrived with our backpacks on the back of mopeds from our $10/night hotel. For all her bravado about enjoying the whole backpacker thing, Sonia appeared remarkably at home in this alien world of luxury and pampering..... We stayed there for three fantastic days and it too...

Ruins and Clothes and Feasting and Crashing

After sending ********** to Saigon (she had a short vacation), Chris, Art, and I took the overnight sleeper bus to Hoi An, fabled for its relaxed atmosphere, scrumptious food, excellent tailoring, the fact that it is one of the few places untouched by the French and American Wars, as well as for being a consensus (travelers) favorite destination. We spent 5 days here, mostly due to Chris and I choosing to get hand made, custom fit suits, which meant multiple re-fittings spread out over our ti...

Hoi An: History and Heavy Bags

I've finally discovered my favorite town in Vietnam - Hoi An! Arrived in Hoi An after a quick 50 min. flight from Nha Trang. Surprisingly, there were no surprises on Vietnam Airlines this time - or maybe it's just that the surprises are not longer surprises...

Checked into The Long Life Hotel. After haggling with the reception a bit, I finally got the room I booked. Hotels here don't consider customer satisfaction a very high priority - I've had to let a lot go (complaints and such) b...

Great hotel in a lovely town

from A TripAdvisor Member
We knew we were going to stay in Hoi An for 5 days and initially wanted to see what the hotel was like. They arranged a pick up from Danang and gave us a very warm welcome, tips about hoi an (like where to get good clothes made) and they also arrange great trips around hoi an, we went to My Son. They give you a welcome feeling, and a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the streets of hoi an. We ended up staying for 5 days, though there are better deals for breakfast in town.

They go the extra mile!

My daughter and I spent a week in June of 2006 at this delightful spot in the heart of Hoi An. We shared a room which was spacious and nicely decorated with wood touches on the beds and windows and beautiful fabric curtains and bed linens. The room was very clean and had a small balcony overlooking a garden area where meals were served. We only had breakfast there, but our omelettes with a baguette and coffee were good. I was most impressed by the friendliness and efficiency of the staff. This included the women who cleaned our room and the front desk hospitality staff. They were always around and very willing to answer questions and help in any way they could. They even went so far as to give me a mini- Thai massage as we were checking out. I had been having back problems, and they had noticed I was uncomfortable. Some other people checking out asked hopefully, "Is the massage part of the check out protocol?!" I would go back there in a heartbeat.

Stumbled upon this little gem by chance,so glad we did. After spending several days at Hoi An Beach Resort (which was also good),decided to move into town.

Thanh Xuan is incredible value for money @ $23US/room inc bfast.

Room was spotless, had ensuite,tv & fantastic a con.Double windows with shutters to catch the breeze & tiny balcony overlooking the rice paddies & the garden where bfast is served.Meals were fresh & delicious.

But it is the staff that make this place a bargain. From Thanh (owner) right down to the housekeeping staff, nothing was a problem.Tours are available but there is no pressure. If you want a recommendation for a tailor, they are able to help but again, none of the usual hard sell Vietnam is known for.

We'll be back in 07,thanks Thanh x2.

Loved it !

While in Hanoi, an Australian couple (who planned to spend no more than $300 TOTAL on hotels for a month in Vietnam) told us about this lovely small hotel in Hoi An that cost about $20. It was more than they liked to spend, but we were skeptical. ($20 for a hotel?) Anyway, we arrived by taxi, the staff rushed outside to meet us, helped us carry our bags up three skinny flights of stairs and did everything possible to make us confortable. Our Aussy pals told us to get a room at the back of the hotel, overlooking the garden. The first two nights, that room was already booked, so we stayed in the front. Hoi An isn't Las Vegas, so the "street noise" was no problem. Our last night, the staff moved us to the back. It was lovely, as well. Rooms are clean, charming and safe. I would stay there again. Vietnamese coffee is excellent, too. As I am frightened of getting sick from unpastuerized dairy products, it wasn't until our stay at this hotel, that I tried coffee with milk. It's actually sweetened condensed milk poured into the bottom of the cup, with strong Vietnam-grown coffee poured over it. Delicious. And the garden area in the back of the hotel is charming. Just remember your DEET. My spouse rarely gets bitten, but the bugs like me, even with DEET. You'll need it. Bottom line, we stayed an extra day in Hoi An because the people at this hotel were so wonderful. It was one of the best experiences of our entire southeast Asia vacation. I only wish I could bring some of these people back to the U.S. with me. We could learn a few things about hospitality from the staff at the Thanh Xuan. Thanks. Vicky and Victor.

Breakfast in the Garden

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Thanh Xuan hotel in Hoi An is a lovely medium sized hotel with any amenity you could want. the prices include fully cooked breakfast served in a beautiful back garden. the girls are lovely, helpful and very capable in dealing with any problems that may arise. A small hiccup from the bus station was quickly resolved on arrival at the hotel. rooms are clean, quite spacious and cool even in the hot weather. no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Unglaubliches Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member

Thanh Xuan - A haven in Vietnam

from A TripAdvisor Member
We loved the Thanh Xuan! The staff were so kind and welcoming, the atmosphere serene, our room was spacious and xtra comfortable. After we had a hard time in Ho Chi Minh this place was a haven. Their banana chocolate pancakes are the best and they recomended a good tailor too.

Wonderful and value hotel

from MyPrecious
This is one of the friendliest and helpful hotel we found in Vietnam. On the day of our arrival, even though the hotel was quite full, the staff were very helpful and took initiative to make sure we got two rooms that are side by side. The rooms are lovely and spacious with a big ensuite bathroom. Furthermore, the hotel is relatively new and very clean! It is really good value for money!

The staff quickly helped us plan our itinery in Hoi An after we settled down. The staff were so thoughtful that they remembered one of my friend's birthday which fell on the second day of our stay, and a bouquet of flowers was awaiting him when we returned to the hotel that night.

It is in fact a pleasurable and memorable stay in Thanh Xuan Hotel. Thanks for being a wonderful host.

Homestay experience in Hoi An

from A TripAdvisor Member
We reached Hoi An very early in morning - wihtout arrangment with any hotel!!

After hopping a few budget hotels, we landed on Thanh Xuan. B4 we make our decision, the friendly staff - patiently showed us to many rooms (at different levels) that fit our budget. She even explained the various amenities available in the room - without us asking!

Touched with sincerely and gd services, we decided to check in.

Throughout our stay, all the staffs are prompt in assisting in our needs, and ensured that we can optimise and enjoy our stay in Hoi An.

The hotel room has advance facilities, centralise power card control, and a bath tub, which is rare in a budget hotel.

Overall, a very homely stay in Hoi An. Thanks!

Great hotel in Hoi An

from A TripAdvisor Member
Super hotel about 3 mins walk from the centre of the old town on a quieter street filled with tailor shops and restaurants. The staff were really helpful, knowledgable and professional and they serve a great breakfast in a little courtyard in the back. The hotel rooms vary in design ours was on the top floor with a Chinese motif, very clean, great hot shower, satellite tv and refreshments in the fridge. A welcome fruit basket topped it all off. For a reasonable price, great location and courteous staff check out the Thanh Xuan.
