Exploring the Acropolis

... is a small stone structure also on the summit, decorated with friezes and statues and is from 114-116 AD to honor the Roman politician. It was from this hilltop that the Venetians fired at the Parthenon, causing it to explode.

The New Acropolis Museum opened up extremely recently (like within the last week) so we were able to experience that. There were lots of items and pieces from temples on the Acropolis that had been found. Nearly everything was from ...

The BibFem Four's Perfect Day

Dutch, Chaplain, Nurse Cubby, Gramma, and I all walked up to the Acropolis today. What a difference one month makes. First of all, the weather was beautifully breezy instead of blow-torch hot, we got to walk at our own pace instead of leaving me in the dust as always happens with the student group, and I have finally achieved some familiarity with the area so I didn't get us lost once. I felt proud at each site along the way to be able to rattle ...

Observe the Sabbath and Keep It Hungry

... it any longer. I went down to the gyro shop. Alas, no gyros on Sundays. Strike three. There was a taverna open nearby. I walked in and the man behind the counter started talking to me in what sounds to American ears as a gruff tone. I asked for water, bread, and melitzana salata, an eggplant dip (much yummier than it looks or sounds) I had eaten last week with Sunshine. I didn't get any melitzana salata. Strike FOUR! I got horiatiki salata, literally translated as ...

This Train, Beach Glyfada?

... now we were at the right tram station. Now we had to buy our tickets. Acckkkhhhh - the machine wouldn't take my Five Euro note. Wedding Belle graciously paid for my ticket with her euro coins. Mary Lou and Belle are working on learning their Greek letters in class, so (gulp) I'm the one in the group with the most Greek. I asked a woman (I never ask men if I can help it) if this is the correct tram to take us to the beach in Glyfada. Only I have no verbs or articles, and it comes ...

Super Yacht Time

... boat! Once the steering was fixed we were off to the Islands, first stop Poros. Captain Costos got us a great spot in Russian bay where he hooked up the ropes and anchors. The water was beautiful, so clear and warm and we had all the toys, water-skis, wakeboards, biscuits, kayaks, snorkels, flippers and beer! We ended up staying at this amazing island for 4 nights as we had the best spot and the Meltemi winds were playing havoc with the rest of the islands. So over the days ...

The City on the Hill

... level in a jiffy. Hopefully, the government scatters fresh marble pebbles here daily to keep the efforts of people like me in check. When I've had as much antiquity as I can bear, I return through the now dense crowds and tour groups in matching shirts and hats and walk back a kilometer or so to Syntegma Square in the already punishing heat, where I drink my weight in ice water and iced coffee in the shade of the cafe where I spent part of my first afternoon on May 2.

That's Greece

... guy. I am incredibly curious why this isn't covered, and no, there isn't a seprate museum for it... This is a battle that is sometimes interpreted as the first triumph of democracy as free citizens fought to defend their way of life from a foreign emperor. Equally, that the democracy later voted itself into anniliation by pushing endlessly into other pointless wars was not looked at either. Sad to not get into this. The War Museum also highlighted how history is ...

Athens.... day two. Hot and Noisy....

... was great. the kind of thing that was just ice, coffee and milk. i wish it was like that in Canada. I am not a big fan of the syrup, or cream or that sort of thing. Anyways, then we went to this place that had various fruits and nuts. Erin got banana chips, i got Prunes. I miss them dearly.... good ol' prunes... But then we went to a supermarket, and got some more shampoo and conditioner because we are almost out, and now we actually ...

2 Weeks with Mom and Dad - Italy and Greece

... be draining with the endless museums, churches, and sites throughout Italy - especially in Rome. So it was very nice on our last night in town to sit down at a great outdoor restaurant on the cobblestone streets of Rome to enjoy some excellent Italian cooking with large quantities of Italian red wine to reflect on an amazing 2 weeks together. After traveling alone over the past 6 months it was great seeing my parents again. The time ...

The beginning and end of it all

... today. We also strolled through the Agora Museum and marveled at the artifacts recovered that bear testament to the Greeks' lifestyle and advanced system of government (for instance, they had on display a voting machine, a machine that picked unbiased juries, and fragments of votes made to fulfill the ostracism requirement, wherein each voter was required by law to write down the name of the candidate he felt would be most detrimental as leader to the city. The person ...
