Myoko to Kyoto- a 4 train journey

... the Hikari to Kyoto. It was super fast and we were there in no time. Our hostel in really nice, great location, tiny room but comfy bed and very clean. It is called Khaosan Kyoto and has 6 floors. We have a double room, very compact but fine. There is a dining, kitchen and sitting area on the floor under ours which is handy. To avoid the chilly wind and the sporadic little snow flurries, we went for a scout around the area I'd heard the ...

... as once you get going it can get very hot. The spot he took us too had no one else around, hard to believe that in summer it is a golf course. It has about 3 m of snow coating it! I only fell over once and that was because I was trying to stand on one ...

Today is the day to venture up to the Japanese Alps to Myokokogan. Marina was lovely enough to drop us over to the train rather than us having to go all the way back down to Nagano and back up on the other line. The train had few other tourist looking mobs on it heading up to the ski resorts. It was a pretty journey up through the hills with the snow getting deeper and deeper. We ...

We woke this morning to more snow, big fluffy flakes pouring down. Breakfast this morning was a plethora of small dishes delicately placed on our table. Vegetables were steamed with the onsen spring water in front of us while we blanched mushroom, spinach and pork in a broth on our table. Miso, pickled vegetables, partly cooked egg, tofu, seared salmon were just some of the other items we had. After breakfast we headed off to the famous onsen here. There is nothing ...

... stopped at a supermarket and we're blown away at how cheap fruit/vegetables, meat and fresh sashimi fish is. No wonder the Japanese eat so well. The temple and shrines were beautiful but it was pretty cold walking around. Another train for about 40 minutes and we arrived at Shiga Kogen where we are staying at a beautiful ryokan with our own private onsen bath outside in the snow. Time for some rest and ...
