We ate two huge chunks of juicy beef pavé with some rice and vegetables. What the auberge lacked in ambience, it made up for by the quality of its beef. According to our waiter, it's too early in the season for French tourists, apart from the retirees down on the med, who come to the mountains in June to escape the heat.

Unlike yesterday, the weather was gloriously sunny today, so it was nice just to wander the steep avenues of the fortified town and take in the atmosphere of the place. There are very few tourists around, and some of the tackier tourist shops are still closed this early in the season, which suited us fine. The buildings are 4 or 5 stories high and painted ...
... to get a lot colder nearer the top, and we had to get our jackets on while we were still climbing. About 1 km from the top, cars have an option to take a tunnel through the mountain rather than going over the pass - it's not an option for bikes! That final ascent is really hard, especially in the rain. The gradient increases and, well, we were pretty tired by then.

Once past the twisty bits, there is a long straight slightly undulating stretch that is perfect for tandems, and we were able to settle into a comfortable 35 kph and enjoy the scenery.
